X5 2016 Battery

My F15 will soon be four years old and has 27.5k miles. Curious to know what the general sensuous is about battery life for these cars? I don't want to get caught on a trip and the battery goes out. With Corvid19 don't know when that might be but just thinking ahead. Look forward to comments from people who have been there with this issue before. I'm an "ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" guy. Thank you!

Generally 5 to 6 years. Sometimes they'll last longer, but then suddenly one day, your battery will just die off quickly and leave your stranded!

Our F15 is 5 years old now and a little over 23k miles. We replaced the battery November last year. Surprising considering we live in Vegas. Some hints that I noticed was the HUD wasn't functioning, side mirrors wouldn't remember last position, BMW logo wouldn't display on startup and auto stop start didn't work.
Off topic, I replaced my run flat Goodyear's with Conti non RFT Extremecontact DWS 06 last September and got the compact spare online. Much better and quieter ride.
A DHP pump leaked last year and was replaced. Covered under our extended warranty. The tech said the steering on DHP equipped X5s is hydraulic.
Key fob battery replaced September last year.
CEL January this year. Oxygen sensor replaced under extended warranty.

Hello,

I have a 2014 F15 with 83k

mine has been on the drive for 7 weeks due to lock down and the battery went flat so I bought a CTEK MXS 5.0 charger and it topped it up just fine - took it out for a 30 mile trip just to make sure

The only thing I have an issue with since then is the TPMS shows a RDC failure and key fob doesn't lock/unlock the car - I have to use the key inside the key fob

2014 X5 40d, with 72K miles. Original battery, no issues.

Off Topic: LVbimmer, DHP (Dynamic Handling Package) equipped vehicles have hydraulic steering? Really? I thought all F15s were electric steering. Anyone else confirm?

Mine started to struggle around 72k on my 2014. Replaced it about 1.5 years ago at this point

Brought it in because there was clear oil like fluid on the garage floor. I asked the tech why it was a hydraulic pump when most modern bimmers have electric steering. He said the hydraulic pump is connected to both the DHP and power steering. I just looked it up too, it's all part of BMW Dynamic Drive.
32-41-6-856-680 Hydraulic Pump $1236.42

On the invoice
20370 DIAG LEAKING PS PUMP, REPLACE PS PUMP VEHICLE WITH DYNAMIC DRIVE, BLEED AND PERFORM START UP OF DYNAMIC DRIVER CLEAR ALL FAULTS

Battery Life

I had to replace Battery on 205 X5 at 50,000 Miles. It was recorded on the diagnostic scan by BMW dealer. I did not notice any functional issue and that may be due to using it every days which keep battery charged.

Also, Dealer mentioned Oil leak from the Turbo Feed Line (3100$ repair), in fact it was loose clamp which keeps Turbine and Compressor gather. After tightening, the oil leak disappeared.

Now seeing oil seepage from Oil Pan Gasket (dealer priced 3000$ repair). So I feel that the X5 is not worth keeping after warranty expires, unless you can do some research and get it serviced by your self or other cost efficient options.

I charge my car’s battery with a tender at least once a month if not once every two weeks especially with me not driving it much now with the COVID-19 going around.

Ensure you drive in Eco Pro mode or Comfort in order to maximize the ECU sending voltage from the alternator to charge the battery. Driving in Sport will minimize if not mitigate any battery charging. Also, a modern AGM should be good for 10 years, if properly driven and chargen is attained with these F15s.

I hooked my diagnostic tool up to my X5 and put the voltage reading into graph mode. Pretty cool to watch the voltage surge and drop in accordance with the Efficient Dynamics / ECO Pro "Charge" meter.

I also hook up my battery to my 20A Odyssey battery charger every so often. BMW said every 2 years for a battery swap which is insane but that was when under warranty.... and they did it no charge. IIRC it was also up upgrade from a 90AH to a 105AH? But I could be mistaken.

All depends how you drive.

Eco Pro is not good for charging the battery, as it does not send any current to the battery while normal driving or coasting. It only charges the battery while braking.

If you want to recharge the battery, Comfort mode is the best option.

‘15 X bought with 77,000 (82,000 now) original batteries. Purchased a CTek and it’s always plugged in if not being driven (retired, so it’s not driven on a daily basis). Hope to coax a few more months out of them

2014 F15 X5 90k miles (145k kms) on the original battery. I am changing them because i don't want to risk it into a 7th Canadian winter. I'm going to open up a new thread about coding issues.
