H&R 12mm Spacers doesn't fit up Front??
I picked up two sets of 12mm H&R 74.1 bore spacers for my F15.
They fit the rears perfect but they do not fit the fronts. The hub bore size is correct and that isn't the problem but when I insert the spacer all the way in where the internal beveled lip is maxed out the spacer isn't sitting flush on the hub. There is maybe 2-3mm gap and that isn't safe to use unless the face is sitting flush and flat against the factory hub. Is there a different part for the front for the F15?? Alan

Alan,
Do you the picture? I never use spacer in my F15, so I didn't know about this. But sold a few sets 15mm and up without an issue. Could it be the 12mm is not deep enough?

I didn't have my phone with me so no pic but you get what I'm saying right? The spacer has a internal cut out for the cars hub to slide into it. It's like the cut out isn't deep enough so it stops the spacer from going all the way in to sit against the hub of the car. I can imagine a bigger spacer wouldn't have this problem because it's big enough to reach.

Email H&R maybe the cut on that batch isn't met to BMW spec?

The thing is it fits in the rear 100% perfect as it should. I am guessing the hub lip on the front is slightly taller by 2-3mm on the F15.
I even tried tightening the lugs around the spacer to see if I could force it in but nope. I would be flexing the spacer and it still wouldn't be flush so I ended up only putting the spacer in the back with nothing up front. I also removed the black weather proof hub cap on the hub to see if it made any difference but nope. Alan Last edited by Alan l.; 06-01-2015 at 11:30 PM.. |

Is there extra build up or rust on the hub? I know with my other BMW's I've run into that issue before and a light sanding of the hub usually takes care of it. I know your car is pretty new so it probably doesn't have too much gunk on it.

Alan,
I got what you are saying. It is the hubcentric center bore not deep enough. I guess BMW hub is really tall do accommodate the front axle on the AWD.

Strange indeed. Easy way to confirm is pull off the wheels on one side and eyeball or measure the lip of the hubs and see if the fronts really are few millimeters taller.
Other possibility would be that you got a set of spacers that were milled just a tad bit shallower in the center, i.e. it's manufacturing defect/anomaly?

There must be a problem with the part itself. My cousin just fitted in 12mm on the front and 15 mm on the rear (H&R) on his F15 and they're perfect.

I'm not buying the theory that they were milled incorrectly because that same spacer I used installed in the rear of my X5 100% perfect. No gaps or anything and the spacer sat completely flush against the cars hub. In fact i could easily just used my hand to push the spacer all the way in where as the front i was even trying to hammer it or screw it in....still didn't go in any further. Time to get on the phone with H&R... Alan

I ran the e70 version (74.1) H&R +20 in the front with no issues. I would check to see if the 15 on the rear also fit the front. That would point to the 12's being incorrect or incompatible.

I took my front wheel off again and this time i snapped a pic. Didn't have a ruler with me so I took a pic using my metrocard as reference. As you can see the front hubs on my 2015 X5 35i xdrive is almost 14mm in size. This is why when i inserted the 12mm H&R spacer on it it was 'bottoming out' inside before the outside of the spacer could reach the rotor.
I even removed the black hub cap there and it made no difference

Here's some info i found on Turner Motorsports website which describes the exact situation with the H&R 12mm spacer up front on my 2015 35i Xdrive
"Bottoming-Out The spacer must sit flush against the brake hat and must not bottom out against the lip as that leaves a gap between the spacer and brake hat. The spacer will then flex over the lip and eventually crack to pieces. Unfortunately, there is no common or standardized lip depth. Most BMWs have a depth of less than 10mm. But there are a few where the lip sticks out further - E46 M3 rear, E90 325xi, F30 3-series, and maybe more. Production tolerances, and even choice of brake rotor and/or hub, can also play a factor in how the spacer fits. For instance, a rotor with an aluminum hat may be thinner than a cast iron part and the thinner hat will allow more lip to protrude. Many BMW owners have run into this problem, especially with 10mm spacers. The 10mm spacers are more susceptible to this because it physically will not fit over a lip larger than itself. Most spacer manufacturers consider 10mm to be a "tuner" fitment where the shop would make the necessary changes to ensure a correct fit. If any spacer bottoms out on the lip instead of against the rotor, there are two options: buy a larger spacer, or shave/grind down the lip until it clears. Using a larger spacer is better as moving up in size is usually a small jump (the difference between 10 and 12mm is the thickness of a nickel!)"
