X5 50i engine

Hi all,
First post here
As I inch closer to ordering a 16 x5 50i...I had a few questions

I'm coming from two Jeep Grand Cherokee srt a 12& had a 14...beasts but what can I say American truck still that u can tell is not fine craftsman ship.

I have not owned aa BMW since my2001 330ci... Which I loved.. But that engine was legendary in line 6

Now bmw is all turbo... So my concerns are.. For the 8 In turbo..
How is the reliability now? Is it still solid bmw.
I read the 35i is more reliable.. But I need my neck snapping pull

Should I have major concerns about the 8 turbo? I know she eats oil

Any input in my new baby will be greatly appreciated!

I went through the same thoughts. The new n63tu v8 TT was released in 2013. Only 3 years of data. I could not find anything real bad and bought the 2016 50. My wife has a 2015 35. Both are great vehicles so far. Hers has plenty of power with MPPK. She gets 17-18 mpg town and 27 highway. I get 13-14 town 23 highway. Both have DHP. In tight S curves the 35 is slightly better due to 450lbs less weight. The 50 is BRUTE FORCE on the straights ! Good luck.

At the moment searching this and the other forum is your best resources regarding reliability of the TTV8 and MPPK for the inline 6 engines. My X5 35i with MPPK and Racechip tune is fast!

Edit: MPPK stands for M performance power kit sold by BMW and this tune will keep your warranty intact.

We got the Dinan tune on my wife's 2015 35i which is more HP and torque than MPPK, and it is still not even close to my 2015 50i. Dinan also provides BMW approved warranty coverage. Installed at the dealer.

Can't go wrong with 35 and MPPK. Blows away the mdx we traded. Add air ride as a minimum or dhp if you hit the curves a lot.

Vbox numbers for ya if you go 35.

Pure stock 0-60 was 5.9.

MPPK was 5.7

Dinan plus MPPK is 5.3

Not in stone as vehicles can vary, but it "should" be close.

Overall, the 35 is a very balanced package since it is lighter.

What is a Vbox? BMW claims MPPK shaves .5 second off 0-60 ( BMW's official numbers are 0-60 6.1 seconds ) So 0-60 after MPPK is 5.6 seconds which is pretty close to your numbers... and we all know BMW is very conservative with their numbers.

Steve Dinan from Dinantronics did a dyno on a BMW 335i with MPPK and the numbers were higher than what BMW advertised..

Attached is the MPPK literature from BMW for reference.

Here is a vbox run of the 35 Dinan plus MPPK. Same gps box that Motertrend, C&D etc use for their tests. Set with 12 inches of rollout to mimic an official NHRA strip.

Recdog11, the JEEP SRT is much quicker than the 35i with a flash and a chipped tune combined. If you're looking for the neck snapping you're used to, go for the 50. Don't want to pay 2-3k for the tunes and then regret your choice afterwards.

If you're driving in NYC traffic like me, mainly in slow traffic, get the 35i.

This is spot on. 50i is the way to go if coming from SRT.

2015 50 and no problems. Had a 2007 Jeep SRT and Super Bee. The 50 is much quicker to me. Get the 50 and a Dinan, or wait until BMW comes out with a software upgrade like they did for the 35. We have a 09 135 with the PPK. Nice little car and quick, but still cant compare to the 50.

If you don't get the 50i you will always regret it. Exhilarating response, as in OMG!
