Unloaded the beast at Willow Springs Raceway

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
This past weekend I took the beast out to Speed Districts event. They are known for hosting all track events mainly at all Willow Springs Raceway. I like the events they host because everyone is cautious and cares about their car, also they don't over pack the track so your more comfortable when your out there.

I previously had a F80 M3 so going from that car to the F85 X5M is a big difference driving it on the track. I've had my F85 for a little less than 2 months so I'm still getting use to it. I was a little nervous taking SAV on the track even though I knew it can handle it.

Let's start by saying this car is a beast everyone at the track was shocked. There were a lot of Porsche GT3s and F82s. I didn't really prep much since it was a last minute decision to go early Sunday morning. I get to the track sign up fill out the paper work and get ready to go on. When I say this car is a beast I mean wow I'm shocked myself that I'm taking turns going 90+ and coming out of turns just as fast. I hit about 140 on the straight coming out of turn 9. I didn't get that much run time since I didn't want to demolish my 21" tires that aren't even 2 months old. The car sounds amazing and runs great with no problems what so ever. BMW sure knew what they are doing when they built this car.

For the car being AWD I got sideways about 3 or 4 times possibly because my tires were just getting really hot. I drove in MDM with Sport Plus on everything and gear shifting on level 3. I snapped some pictures and I got to take a GoPro video right before the battery died. Wish I knew I was going to the track so I could have charged it and got more videos.

I will be tracking the car again once I get my suspension on and other mods but for now the next track event I go to will probably be an airstrip event.

As soon as I figure out how to post the video I will post that as well.

Awesome. Definitely something you don't see at the track everyday. I love the F85 myself, just way out of my budget unfortunately.

Why did you get rid of the F80?

Awesome. I saw one on the freeway last week and saw the driver get on it. I was very surprised how quick the car was. I tried to keep up, but he was going a little too fast in traffic for my comfort. Nonetheless it's a beast that I'm sure will catch people off guard.

Very cool! I was at BMW M Performance school in Greenville when the first gen x5m (e70) first appeared there pre-launch. At the time no one thought it could actually track. I've since been passed by said model on the track (in another car!). They are quite capable, congrats on the move and the decision to track it!

I'm curious, what suspension mods do you have planned?

There was a great article in Roundel several months back about the X5M/X6M. The guy who wrote it claimed he hated the idea of a SAV M, an AWD M, and even hated the previous generation of these cars. However, he took it out on the track and was just as pleasantly surprised as you were, especially when it came to the AWD part of it. He claimed it drove so well you would have had tough time knowing it was AWD. The article went pretty deep into the technical engineering aspects of the AWD system. Apparently, BMW has done some amazing stuff there. I've never driven one myself, but that article made me optimistic about the possibility of an AWD M5, which we now know is coming.

BMW has made impressive AWD models as far back as the 1980s with the E30 325ix..

So compared to the M3, what did you feel like you have up?

Having been a driver and passenger around that track more times than I can remember, I fully understand how the elevation change of the Budweiser balcony and the turn 8-9 double apex upsets a cars balance and challenges a driver's skill. I'm excited to see the video of a big SUV flying around!

Mark, beat you to it. Traded my 1M for a spec Miata and an X5M to tow it. Then ended up tracking them both. I've had the X on MSRH, TWS and MSRC. Heading to COTA this weekend.
