The mods have begun. 2017 X5 35i M-Sport.
I have started my modifications on this truck. Coming out of a heavily modded F80 I wasn't expecting to like this truck so much but stock it's quick. But not quick enough. I first purchased Pilot Super Sports 285/35/21 325/30/21 with style 375 replicas.
These trucks should never have anything less as far as width goes. Makes the ride more stable. My truck came with standard suspension so I added the Eibach prokit for my body(RGsport). The drop now equals the height of the X5M. Not great but good. I will be changing this after winter for KW V3. Not because of any issues with the Eibach but with KW you can adjust the rebound and stiffen it up even further. Now to the fun stuff, Installed BMS air intake, JB4, anf VRSF Downpipe. Wow what a difference. Map 5 with e85 feels very strong. I plan to have a flash tune done after I purchased the Pure Stage 2. For now I am very happy. The truck is night and day from when I picked it up. I also installed a Massive Hippo 12 with the Massive 4000w amp. But I just transplanted that from the M3. Shout out to Tom from Rayco 4 in Levittown. Shop is fair priced and cool dude.

Looks great. Why not start with the 50i though if you're after performance?

Looking good.
Let me know if you are going to upgrade to the KW, I have them in stock. I had similar setup as yours before. Lookup my dyno result, you should be producing about the same hp/tq.

It reminds me of e90 forum, where 335i guys would humiliate 328i guys for not buying the proper car to begin with, but let's not do that here in x5/x6 forum
Lots of people either didn't know about 50i or decided that 35i should be enough for them or maybe just wanted to save money or other reasons. I for one myself was looking at 35i and only found out about 50i on the dealers lot last minute. Test drove it after 35i and immediately felt in love, but I know some owners who only realized there was something else besides 35i and 35d. UPDATE: OP clearly chose 35i knowing what he is buying, so good for him OP if you whould ever change to KW V3? please post your review - would be interesting to hear your thoughts |

You may want to ask them directly. Could be some setting that need to be enabled since they were under CARB's radar.

Wait..what? I asked a question on a forum. I thought it was a valid question. Was not, nor would I ever, try and humiliate someone. Sheesh. |

My concerns with modding are always that I'll void my warrantee. Also, if the car was designed a certain way, wouldn't certain mods actually create a potential for reducing the reliability? And then, the car is no longer covered. But surely it sounds like you know what you are doing. Again, love the wheels. Have fun. |

Plenty of reasons some of us want more power in a 35i and didn't opt for a 50i or M: reliability, initial cost, and MPG being the main ones. For me, the reason was reliability. The cost difference between 35i and 50i (on a 2 year old car) is a only few thousand, and I don't put on enough miles to see a significant difference in fuel cost.
I didn't even test drive an F15 50i because of the frequent repairs I had on my E70 50i. In just under 3 years of ownership it had the N63 update, rear main seal failure, breather lines leaking, coolant hose leaking, turbo seals leaking, upper oil pan cracked and leaking, and some other smaller (non 50i related) stuff like thrust rod bushings, starter failure, AC belt failure, control valve leak, heated seat failures, and many more. The car spent nearly 3 months cumulatively over 10 dealer visits in less than 3 years. That is not including scheduled maintenance. After factory warranty was up, I had a very good extended warranty but I still had some significant costs for what the warranty didn't cover. Changing from an E70 50i to F15 35i, even with the MPPK and Race Chip, frankly I miss the 50i quite a bit. But, considering how few opportunities I have to really get on the pedal, the extra maintenance for the extra power doesn't make sense. I decided I don't want to be slave to taking my car to the dealer 3-4 times a year and spending that extra money on repairs. But I want all the power I can safely get out of the N55. |

Sounds like you just got a bad car. Your experience is certainly not typical. But whatever you prefer is the right answer. I personally hate that I need to carry around oil with me. Other than that, it's a dream. And I love the power. Either way. Like you say, lots of reasons one might choose one or the other. |

I'd love to drive a modded 35i and compare to my 50i. Love the power but only had a chance to drive stock 17 35i and power is seriously lacking compared to 50i but I see it in gas mileage for sure. Luckily only 20k miles so no issues yet. But bought full ext warranty for 5 years to cover length of loan.

Truly, if I do decide I want more power, I'll pick up an X5M. I've already started looking the comparable MB AMG. But I'm currently super happy with my car. |

I didn't mind adding some oil now and then, not too big a deal. I realize that there are plenty of 50i's that have hardly any issues, and some that have more issues than mine. I did read that the N63tu is totally redesigned, but I didn't want to potentially have extra maintenance for something I'll rarely use. If the N63tu proves to be reliable as the engine ages my next one will be a V8. Nothing you can (reasonably) do to the 35i to compare.

My original thoughts were to go the 8cyl route but after research and my knowledge of the n55 platform, I realized which would be best for me.
