GL is a complete new model and looks good. It doesn't have a direct rival from BMW, but it's more expensive than ML so we can compare it with X6, so I don't think it has better sales
I've had an X6 and just ordered an X6M. I also have a 2012 GL550.

The short of it is, in no way possible, not even under any amount of influence of hallucinogenic mind-altering substances, can anyone ever compare an X6 to a GL.

You said it right - the GL doesn't have a direct competitor from BMW. And, in my opinion, the X6 does not have any direct competitor from MB or any other brand for that matter.

Agreed with you that GLK is ugly (and a piece of crap, I get one as a loaner all the time and it just feels cheap).

I guess it's

X1 - GLK
X3 - ML
X5 - GL

My personal opinion, X5 and GL are not in the same league of cars but I do think that they are intended to compete with each other. The GL is bigger and more luxury, whereas the X5 is smaller and more sporty.

The low end MB interiors yes, they definitely feel cheap - including C-class, GLK, E-class Coupe (which has a C-class interior), even E-class itself to a lesser degree though.

Not the high end models though. The S-class, G-class, and GL550 have beautiful interiors and nothing is cheap about them.

Agree about the ride though, they're not as sporty as BMW's.

You're a little off on that list, it should be:

X1 - GLA
X3 - GLK
X5 - ML
X7 - GL

We're just waiting on the X7 and the GLA so that they each fill out their lineups. MB focused on the big SUV first where BMW focused on the small crossover.

Ok, thanks that makes more sense. I never knew there was a GLA because I don't follow MB the way I follow BMW

If I'm not mistaken the GLA is a prototype. Overall that lineup sounds accurate though.
I do however disagree with the ML interiors being cheap. I agreed until I worked at the plant in Tuscaloosa AL for a little while. If you include the designo interior with diamond patters stitched into the seats it's just amazing.
Also there will be a direct competitors to the X6 from MB soon. It's called the MLC or ML coupe and is internally known as the 292.

I agree. X3 is the worst looking car in the entire BMW line up. Its like a glorified RAV 4. I hope they don't follow X3 design here.

Im hoping the new X5 doesnt look like a bigger X3 or I probably wont get one.
Dont get me wrong, I like the X3, but it looks more like a womans SUV to me.
I actually would prefer the X1 over the X3.
I dont like the GLK at all, looks cheap. I use to like the ML, but no longer like it after the refresh.
I only one I actually like is the GL.

This is very interesting, Scott26.

When the SLK first came out, I always thought the K stood for "Kompressor", or supercharger, as it was initially released as an SLK230 with a supercharged 4-cylinder engine. It even had "Kompressor" on the side of it, my brother got one way back when they just started coming out and hitting the streets.

They don't use supercharged engines anymore as of the 2nd generation SLK, but the K stayed in the model designation. So I guess either i was wrong all that time, or it originally did stand for Kompressor but was later changed to "Klein" or small and is now (obviously) used on other models.

call me crazy, but I've always believed that the SLK was a smaller version of the SL. Therefore I assumed the K to mean Compact (German: Kompakt) as in the smaller version of an SL. A compact version of the SL... get it?

Of course it will look like a big x3 (not a good thing). Just like the 4 will be a smaller 6, the 3 a smaller 5 etc. How boring, but get used to it from BMW. The only car that looks unique is the z4. If you want to see the car without camo, take a picture of an x3 and magnify it by say 20%.

You're crazy!

Yeah it makes sense. It is exactly a smaller version of the SL, essentially. I guess I was wrong all this time, I always thought it was K for Kompressor.

It looks too similar to the current series. Probably a good thing for current owners but if BM sticks to this slow evolution in styling they might find themselves behind (dare I say it) the Koreans. The new 3 series is a good example of way too little styling advancement. Personal opinion here and there is enough camo on the car that might still be hiding the good bits. The glass house area, whilst in keeping with the "X5 Style" is just not in line with the more modern shallow style (Audi/Kia (see I said it again)).

Best example of next generation styling for me is RR Evoque. Thankfully Merc's new ML is at least one generation behind the previous model (except for the interior which is a great advancement).

Yes LCI abbreviation was originally Light-bulbs for Candles Initiative lol

About time really BMW started out with LED and Xenons on 3 series and above. Not to mention some basic lumbar support that is standard with most other cars that price and many cheaper too.

Credit to them USB, Bluetooth and now DAB are becoming standard maybe the rest will follow
