So why not utilize the downtime to become experts on the vehicles that the company sells? It will make the day pass faster and make the sales person more effective.

Because while you're sitting at your desk or in a car learning how it works, the other salesmen are standing outside the entrance grabbing all the customers. Pretty sure that's why BMW has geniuses for this purpose. Don't see this ever changing.
