My bet is on better winter traction, as to why BMW chose narrower tires for all 4 wheels. Narrower tires with more sidewall get much better traction in the snow. Since the purpose of these tires is for traction, and not necessarily for aesthetics, it would make sense to choose the option that will provide the best overall performance.
I'd rather have narrower rims/tires that perform better, than ones that look better, and perform worse. It would suck to slide into something/someone, or get stuck somewhere, because I chose aesthetics over function.
