Brought my F15 X5 in for a vibration under idle and one spark plug was misfiring, No CEL. Was recently replaced under BMW maintenance.
On a previous E70 X5 35i, when my transfer case was failing, a sign was when performing a fully turned steering wheel to lock U-Turn, the car would shutter under load, and when turned straight would go away. Not saying that is every scenario, but the transfer case was not working and was replaced under warranty.
All of this may not apply to your case, but just informing you on my experiences.
