E53 maybe? Mine was noisy too. And had the feature where if you idled for a couple of minutes on the driveway you'd get smoke pouring out as it tried to burn off the accumulation in the exhaust. (It was only a eurospec 4 IIRC, there's a reason they charge you to drive them into London).
The E70 was quieter than the E53.
But the N57S in the F15 (40d M Sport) is very quiet and clean. Not quite as quiet as the same engine in a 435 I have noticed, but you'd be hard pressed to say a 40d M Sport F15 was anything but. I can barely hear it even with the radio turned off.
