Thanks everyone for your input! Finally found a trustworthy mechanic and got everything resolved (the previous mechanic was just... confusing). One of the coils was faulty; mechanic replaced and test drove and runs smoothly, but asked to replace the rest since it's just a matter of time before the other ones start going bad!
