Here's paint damage from a stock setup after winter driving for a weekend in the Lake Tahoe area last year. If you get spacers in the front, I HIGHLY recommend getting a clear-bra for the lower fenders.
BTW, BMW refused to repair this under their paint warranty.

this was a huge issue on my e46 m3 as well.. i owned 4 of them and all of them had this sort of rash by the rear wheels.
