I generally do not follow the manufacturer recommendations when breaking in my cars. For the first few hundred km (and most importantly the first few km after driving off the dealer lot) I use moderate to near full throttle in higher gears, with frequent backing off/closing of the throttle, in order to seat the rings. Needless to say, it's a jerky affair for a while. I do take care to avoid high rpms and 100% throttle until about 1000 km or so.

Knock on wood, but since adopting this technique, I have never had an engine that required an oil top up between changes. That includes my X5M, which I have had for a little over a year.
