It is sad if that's what one's motivation is for buying the watch, be it fake or real; the buyer has to be pretty shallow to get some sort of "solace/pride" as a result of his/her things instead of his her character and accomplishments. Unfortunately, it's quite rare that I can make the call as to what the buyer's/wearer's motivation(s) are in connection with a fake watch.
I know the idea you presented certainly is the driver for some folks, but I'm in no position to attribute that cause to them unless I have real proof. I'd just as soon not judge them for the faults and instead look for the strengths they have to offer.
