When I replaced the tires on our '14 X5d at ~36K miles, with 19" wheels on a square setup, the difference in tread depth across 12 readings (3 across the tread width on each of 4 tires) was 1 mm with the exception of two readings which were 2 mm different. From my experience rotation is not only unnecessary, but would not provide a benefit.
