Using a staggered or square setup is a matter of preference. If you do get 2 sets of tires I would recommend 2 sets of wheels and not try to swap tires on the same wheels. So the winter set can be whatever size you want.

Everything with tires is a compromise.

- Conventional wisdom is narrower tires are better in snow and ice - up to a point.
- Conventional wisdom is wider tires are better in the dry - up to a point.
- Taller tire sidewall is less likely to result in damaged wheels when hitting potholes.
-Taller tire sidewall has more tire wall flex and a softer ride.
- There are more choice of winter tires for certain sizes or if you want RFT. Some sizes may be out of stock later in the season if you need a replacement.
- How do you want the car tires to look? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
- Winter tires only help up to a point. If too much snow gets underneath the car and all 4 tires lose traction, you are stuck.
