They are continuously air cooled by exterior air flowing into the intake. Placing the intake down low out of engine compartment would increase risk of hydolock of the engine without much change in intake charge temp. I'm guessing the airbox is closer to ambient temp than the engine bay temp and air flowing thru isn't going to be heated by much flowing thru it.
