Please disregard Picasso, he must be new to tuning and has been spreading unneeded info.
These cars can handle any stage you want depending on how the tune is developed.
The stock turbos don't have enough boost to pop your engine. The only way you are bending a rod is through hydrolock, bad tune(poor fueling/timing/etc) , poor octane, or bad maintenance.
A proper tune that adds 150hp/tq is not problem for the TU.
I guarantee the people you know either had bad tunes or beat the hell out of the car and maintained them poorly.
