I think back to my Autobahn days and think I'm blessed for surviving them. After I got out of the Army in Germany in '85, I stayed there and taught driver's ed classes for Central Texas College. I would teach at a different military base every week. Some of them were quite far from where I lived. I had a '77 633 CSi that would fly and I was able to buy gas at the military price (about 25 cents a liter, IIRC), so fuel saving was not an issue. The Autobahn was wide open in those days. Rarely did you encounter a speed limited stretch. I would always drive well above 100MPH and I'd get pissed if someone was poking along in the left lane and made me slow down to 100 or less. And yet at that time I'd never even heard of an airbag in a car. I wore my seat belt, of course, but in a 100MPH+ crash, that wasn't going to help a whole lot. Never bothered to think about it at the time. I guess that's just the wisdom of age talking to me now.
