clip holding 3rd row seat belt snapped off

I have 3rd row seats in my vehicle and the clip that holds the seat belt to the side panel when not in case snapped off. Now the right hand seat belt interferes with the cargo cover whenever I try to open/close it.

I spoke to service advisor at dealer and said they have to remove the entire side panel trim to replace it and said it is not covered under warranty because it was not a defect. I bought the car new last November.

Anyone else had similar problem? The piece feels so flimsy and easy to break off.

I want to try and replace it myself. Does anyone know the part number for the side panel and how I can remove it and replace with new? I have the beige interior but the trunk section including the panel is black.

I'm attaching a couple of pics of the part that broke. thanks for any assistance.

From the parts catalogue, is the part for which you are looking in one of these diagrams?

Mine are still intact, but they definitely aren't the greatest design. The belts always get snagged when unloading cargo and snap these back...I'm waiting for the day when I break one.

Almaretto, I think the part is in here, I think part #9.

I don't know how to remove the panels to get to that part. I spoke to my dealer and got a somewhat cryptic message there they will try to replace via warranty but don't know until they inspect the damage. I bought the car last November.

Stewy604 - yes I think the design is a bit flawed; it's very flimsy. I broke it when I tried to open it to clip the belt. The spring is strong so you have to pull hard to open it but gentle enough not to open it too far. Last week I nearly snapped the left side off too. I'm not sure if it's worth replacing.

There are diagrams with instructions on how to remove through Rheingold ISTA+. If dealer cannot replace. Here is part with price.

I think I jinxed myself, my driver's side clip came out yesterday when unloading some gear from the trunk. No signs of anything being broken. I briefly took a look at it and how to get it back in there. Its a b*tch to say the least. The parts I have in hand are the plastic clip itself, a spring, and a pin (about 1 1/2" long). Is there more to it?

Mine broke off about two months ago. They don't sell the clip separately. It's the entire trim piece.

Mine was covered by warranty.

If you have the pin, you still need to remove the trim to install the pin, so if you have warranty still, I'd get it replaced.

Just spoke to my local dealer, parts are on order (3 days away). Correct, in looking on realOEM, the clip is part of the entire panel. Even though I have the components, they're going to install a whole new trim piece under warranty.

They will slide right on...

From the back hatch opening, push the new piece in against the piece with the spring behind it and then push it forward and the tabs will slide over the edges of the piece that is held in with the spring.

Replaced both of mine in about 2 minutes.

Much easier than taking the whole trim piece off,
John

Both my clips broke off yesterday while I was cleaning the back, looks like the little retaining clips just disintegrated.

Part number on back of clip is:
51479112457a
51479112458a
But no matches?

Any links to current replacement parts for just the clips?

I purchased mine from FCP back in 2023. One of them broke, but I replaced both. I only needed the clip itself but it comes as a kit. See picture….

I am experiencing the exact same issue in my two-month old car. In my opinion, it is due to the poor manufacturer design. However my warranty claim was declined due to "external influence". BMW hand over team did not warn the new user nor mention the clips can be so easily snapped off without user's awareness.

The quote to replace the parts is ridiculously expensive. Highly recommend staying away from BMW!!!

So one poorly designed part in the luggage area, is enough reason to "highly recommend" people to stay away from BMW. Looks like someone is a bit mad and lashing out...

See Lonestar22's comment above. If you are handy, they can easily slide back together, unless you actually broke it. When mine snapped off, it took less than a minute to fix. If broken, should still not be that hard to replace if you are handy.

On my 50i, I have third row seats etc. (and I dislike that we don't have the European? version that unclips from the floor and stores into the wall. See two vertical slits where belt goes into wall. Made to hold the clips).

Anyway, I keep the seatbelts out of the way, by using the rear side storage doors to hold belts close to the wall. Works better than the silly clips by themselves..
Open the storage door, place belt behind the edge and push the door back in place, repeat for other side.

Thanks so much for your advice. I will try and see I can buy the parts online and it fix it myself.

To be honest, I am quite surprised this kind of design passed BMW internal test and has not been improved at all since customers reported the issue nearly ten years ago. Maybe my expectation to BMW quality and customer service is too high compared with what I expericed with current dealer recently. This is just my personal opinion and I am sure my next car will not be BMW.

In instances like this, I feel BMW and all other brands too, are already on to the next model and doesn't care about issues with what they are already selling.
Takes a recall for them to change anything on a current model.
