Michelin Pilot Sport 4S (PS4S) replacing Michelin Pilot Super Sport (PSS) in 2017
Seen this post by Jason in the General Section, so replicating it here: http://f87.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1311568
So it seems that performance wise the Michelin PSS are outdone by this new Michelin tire. Interesting to know when BMW starts fitting these on newly produced M2's.

I would bet that the next M5 will probably be the first BMW vehicle with the Sport 4s. |

The PSS are the consencus best overall street performance tire currently available. If the ps4s are that much better then the current ones, which is expected, then we as M2/3/4 drivers are good to go.
As a side bar, i'm kind of nervous about getting the Conti's on my new M2. I don't track but the Michelin's are top notch tires which I can't even request

OK, fairly speaking, nothing is said about the PSS, but still, apparently your Contis won't last long. Looks like PS4S will be the new benchmark for high performance cars. Porsche, Ferrari, etc. won't hesitate to fit these if these improve all-round performance even more than PSS (for track-only purposes, Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires will likely remain their preferred tire). But beware: AFAIK no precise info yet about prices. Given the impressive results, I can imagine that the PS4S will cost more than the (reasonably priced) PSS.

Of the Conti's they could have put on the M2 I would have preferred the DW, they use that tire at the M School and I found them to be very good overall, not quite as predictable at the limit as the PSS but good nonetheless. I think the problem is that even though it is a tire they use at their school its not one that is actually approved with the little star. I believe that because of supply constraints on PSS BMW was forced to look for an approved tire they could substitute to keep production going so they went with this old and not so great substitute. |

The 4S cannot be run in temperatures below 40. Below 30 and cracking may occur which means you are replacing all 4. Is that worth a little more performance? I ran the PSS in 7 degree weather with no problems. The tire was harsh and I felt like I was on hockey pucks. I am probably buying a set of Contis DWS 06 for this next winter. I just can't fit four tires in the car so I will have to make two trips to the tire man. For those of you who live in states where you don't reach the 30s, I am jealous.

Instructed a student in a Cayman GT4 with MP4S and wow they are grippy. I thought they were factory Cup 2 R comps and then he told me they were the new 4S, very impressed.

Nice review!
Just had a set of MP4S put on yesterday. Cannot wait to feel them out a bit. I can at least say the ride quality is much better than the Sportcontact3s, from a 5 mile drive home.

I thought at first that the Conti's were ok but after 2 weeks and 1000+ miles on them I have to disagree. The road noise is terrible at freeway speeds and there are already showing signs of wear. Seeming as Ive been doing break in speeds/driving I cannot see where these should be showing anything. Ive had PSS's on 3 prior M cars and my 911 and, depending on what BMW decides to do, will be putting them on the M2. Guess the question comes down to who will be paying for the change. We shall see what BMW corporate decides to do but my initial feeling is I will be told to pack sand. As with many here, we are longtime BMW brand enthusiasts (M cars in specific) and should be treated with a bit more care when they split how they equip the cars from the factory. Does this take away from my absolute happiness with the M2? Not in the least. What it does do it make me question the way BMW Corporate views its customers. Awaiting their reply, BMW Corporate if you are reading this take note Last edited by Transcon; 07-19-2017 at 07:50 PM.. |
