What to get??

So it's been a while since I've actually logged onto here. I used to have an e90 335i. Since then, I've had a VW Touareg TDI, Jeep GC Overland Summit, Tesla Model S P85, and now my 991.2 911 Carrera S.

I'm looking to get rid of my 911....love it but my family is growing and it just doesn't work for my family anymore.

I'm torn between a 2016 CPO X5M, 2018 X5 50i (purchase), or 2018 X5M (lease).

The biggest thing my wife has asked out of me is for me to keep this next car for at least 4 years.

Pros and cons of each?

I would rule out a lease since they're for 3 years, plus low mileage.
I suggest you "open your horizons" and look outside your immediate area.
There are some very good opportunities in either M or 50i.

Get an X5M lease and then extend it by 1 year. BMW routinely offers that with the same lease terms and no penalty. You will regret not getting an M if you get 5.0. Also, any reason why your wife prefers at least 4 years vs 3 years?

The biggest reason she wants me to keep it 4 yrs is because I've been replacing cars after 6 months to 2 yrs.

Good, but expensive habit!
If I could afford, I would do the same!

Given that the current X5 is stopping production this year and in late 2019 there will be a new X5M I would suggest to hold on buying as resale value would be likely highly affected and you will regret having the older version specially understanding how technology is advancing and the new X5 would be on the CLARC platform so expected to be much more advance.

I would do a 36 month lease or even 42 (which really makes not much sense) and see how you feel then. The advantage of the lease is you are paying for the depreciation so you can always purchase the vehicle any time during the lease.

You should definitely consider the X5M...the 5.0 is more comfortable but understanding you are already used to the 991...X5M should definitely feel perfect.

I wish. I've accumulated a good amount of toys so far...between a 39 Dodge, a Triumph Street Triple R, a Can Am Defender, and the 911, I think I would be pushing my luck if I kept the 911 and picked up another car.

I like the effort though.

Nah...the 39 Dodge is my late grandfather's and will be with me until I die. The bike's worth in smiles and head clearing far exceeds its cost to keep.

Reading your posts, you've made up your mind to move on from the 911. I actually was torn between the 911 turboS and the M5 I just bought. 911 was super cool, but size wise I just was not comfortable. The 911 turboS is 0.2 quicker to 60 and the 1/4 than the M5 so I have some work to do to make them equal there.

If you need the SUV size, I'd lease an X5M for 3 years. Your history in trading will trump your wife's wishes. The new X5M will be out in 2020 so the lease timing will be perfect to upgrade again. Put a RC on the X5M and it will be as quick as the 911 it is replacing. Good luck !

Sometimes - this worked out when I extended an X3 lease for a year to wait for a new X5, same payments, no penalties, etc. This would not have worked out on the 50i MSport. For some reason, BMWFS wanted $300+ more per month for the lease to extend it an extra year. They did agree to a 3 month extension at the same payment when I ordered the M, but that was the max they were willing to offer at the time. I'm not sure what they would do for the M - we should be coming up on lease returns/extensions shortly, maybe someone else on the board has discussed extending an M lease?
