Speedometer seems to be off!

Anyone experience this? I've noticed after the last several 4hr hwy jonts up to DC that when putting in cruise control at 75-80 mph that I'm still being caught and forced to move over. I felt this was odd as I'm usually not experiencing this at 80mph on 95 in VA especially since it's wreckless driving here. Then I happened to notice that my speed recorded by my gps on my phone is consistently 3 mph slower than what my speedometer says. Then I happened by a radar gun and screen on a side street and did a second pass to use it to compare and found it too showing me 2-3 mph slower than my speedo.

I'm running oem 20" 469s with 20mm spacers at the rear. Anyone else ever experience this or would be willing to check your speed on cruise control compared to Waze etc.

Same here, exactly the same and I have the same wheels as you do. I tested it with GPS and also my wife's car.

Interesting. You think about asking the dealer about it? I'm wondering if this affects other things like mileage and mpg, service etc. I mean 3mph isn't significant but that adds up over time. Even at 1 hour of driving a day @ 3mph that's over 1000miles a year.

Welcome to BMW world. That's just how BMW is trying to keep you safe. Bmw reports higher speed than actually traveling. Usually, the error is about 3-7%.

In some cases, you can code the car to show the actual speed. However, the true speed would only work on digital display and not on analog.

I mean - one with dial hands will always show false speed.
Digital display might be able to show true (correct) speed. By digital display, I mean the speed that is shown in numerical way (eg. below tachometer ) or in hud.

Ya The hud is what I was referring too. Never heard of anyone coding the digital numbers to be different. Do you know what that coding is by any chance?

Also any thoughts as to if this affects actual mileage etc?

Same here. It's not only BMW, but almost every other brand I had before. It seems it's a common theme done by manufacturers for safety and legal issues. I can't find article about it, but it's done mainly for safety issues. GPS performance boxes 10/20Hz like Vbox or Draggy can measure true speed more precisely.

This isn’t something new or just Bmw related, almost all automotive manufacturers have speed indicator showing faster than your going.

The speedometer is always 2-3 mph higher than actual for me at 80 mph (so it will show 80, when I'm driving 77-78). I don't think it's that bad actually, though I'm wondering if the odometer is counting more miles than I've actually driven.

BMW speedo optimism. It's been like this forever. For me, going back as far as my 2001 E53.

Ya that's my question. Is this affecting the odometer or service indicators etc. it's adding over 1000 miles per year if it's 3 mph off with 1 hour of driving per day everyday.

Car manufactures add at the most +5 mph to the speedometer to never show a speed below the actual vehicle speed to meet the regulations https://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/regulation...splay=guidance

I would imagine the reasons could be many... safety, to compensate for tire wear which results in smaller diameter could be a few etc.

No, it does not affect the odometer. Most all manufacturers do this, as previously mentioned. For legal and regulatory reasons, speedometers are made to read anywhere from 2% to 5% over. This isn't new. But, also for legal reasons, (there would have been massive class action lawsuits long ago) the odometer reading is accurate. The average is about 3%, but if you really want to know for sure
GPS is the best way to find out what percentage your particular speedo is off by. By it's nature and how it derives position through mathematical equations, comparing frequency shifts from multiple satellites to triangulate position, velocity measurement is actually very, very accurate with GPS.
