Squeaking Brakes
We have really bad squeaking brakes on our 18 X5. The dealer replaced the fronts about 3 weeks ago, but still bad squeaking. Took it in last week and they sanded the rotors down and applied something to them and now they are worse than ever.
I am going to take it again this week. Maybe they should replace back brakes now? Any ideas? It actually hurts your ears. My 17 G30 never does this. |

Not really, dealer said it's still lots of life on them, they perform great and nothing they can do with the squeaking

We don’t either. The dealership sanded them, but did nothing. See what they say tomorrow. Definitely not normal for them to do that. You would think my G30 would do that too, assume they use similar components...

My rears squeak first thing when pulling out of the garage.
Goes away by the first stop sign. Seems to happen either when the weather is cold or damp. Dealer also said normal. |

This is probably due to a thin layer of rust. Once you brake the first time it comes off, thus no more squeak.

You should complete a brake bed in procedure (google it). This should be accomplished any time brake parts are replaced or modified (turned). This is a lost art! Repair shops like to say it isn't necessary any more but this is the continued war on perceived maintenance costs/complexity.
Go for a drive, complete the bed in procedure and see what happens.

Mine squeak bad upon a cold startup. Embarrassing when the sound is magnified in my parking garage at work. I've checked and my rotors and pads are thick enough this shouldn't be an issue. I believe the problem is that the anti-squeak compound they put on the brake pads upon installing a new set has worn off. The problem is if you're going to go to the trouble of pulling the pads and reapplying the compound you might as well go ahead and replace the pads. I plan on doing this soon.

I had the same issue with my brake pads in the back. These were brand new OEM installed at the dealer.
What I noticed is that the updated version of the rear pad no longer has tapered edges (V shape) - I ordered the old part number from BMW 34-21-6-794-879 and problem solved! This was extremely frustrating for me as well. The dealer replaced the pads for me twice thinking it was bad pads, and still they would squeak when damp or cold. It was embarrassing to drive. The other option is to remove the pads and physically file down the edges. I tried it, it does work but this is only a temporary solution as once the pads wear down it happens it. But it's a good way to at least try and know if this is really your issue. |

Good or bad to know that other people have had the issue. Dealer so far claims nothing they can do, but I said that is not good enough for a $70,000 SUV. Like some else said it is embarrassing to wake up the neighbors with those loud brakes or be in a parking center and have people stare they are so bad.
Told the dealer, that they need to keep looking for a fix, while I keep the loaner. |

I'm having the same issue. First thing in the morning pulling out of the garage, and brakes squeak loudly. Just started recently.
OEM brakes replaced by dealer. Very annoying, but goes away as soon as I start driving. I'm waiting on warmer weather, before I decide what to do about it. |
