Extending Ultimate Care

The warranty and Ultimate Care coverage on my X5 expire on June 15th. I'm not going to extend the warranty because those prices are surreal ($3400-$5000 depending on which level), but extending the BMW Ultimate Care+ for another year looks like a good deal.

The X5 has 36750 miles on it today and I drive 9000-10000 miles/yr, so within the next year -
  • Brake Flush
  • Front and Rear Brakes (iDrive estimates service in 6000 miles)
  • At least 1 oil change

I logged into my BMW account and the options presented -
  • $1,050: BMW Ultimate Care+ 2 (5 years / 75,000 miles)
  • $2,150: BMW Ultimate Care+ 3 (6 years / 100,000 miles)
  • $3,250: BMW Ultimate Care+ 4 (7 years / 125,000 miles)

Before extending for another year, I have some questions -
  • Do I have to buy this at "my" dealer? My service advisor is great, if he can do it, that would be great.
  • Can I keep "renewing" Ultimate Care+ each year? Or do I do I get one crack at this and have to decide how many years?
  • Is this something I can negotiate, or is the price what the price is? I tried extending the warranty on a 750i about 5 years ago and they had fake insulted look on their face when I tried to negotiate
  • Are there any hidden gotcha's? Like BMW will cover brake pads, but not the rotors?

Thanks for the help. John

Yes you buy from the dealer, you need to check with the SA not all the plans are extendible , price is usually non negotiable but doesn't cost you anything to ask, no hidden items just everything is required "per book". Just keep in mind that some misc items will not be covered, like rust on the rotor hats or squeaky brakes will be claimed to be "normal". If you have good SA go straight to him, would be the most accurate source of information.

Thanks. Going to talk my SA on Tuesday and get his $.02 so to speak. Also reached out Steve Thomas BMW to get some price points on Ultimate Care+ and Extended Warranty.

You can extend the maintenance plan online. My wife's 2016 528i will be renewed in a few weeks as well. Great thing about that is you can keep extending it.

Spoke with Christine at Steve Thomas BMW and did a 3 year Platinum for the warranty. For the Ultimate Care, extended it 1 year. Next year I'll decide whether or not to keep extending it. There's no real savings in buying a longer period up front, so I'll do that sort of "pay as you go" (year by year). If extending the Ultimate Care, it's worth calling Christine. The savings on the Ultimate Care portion was slim, but slim is better than none.

When it comes to the BMW factory warranty extensions, definitely call them. And if your local dealer is like mine, "oh, you can't negotiate those prices", well... that's BS. Christine was very easy to work with. No hassle, no BS. Very easy.
