Not so much birds and such, although I do that occasionally, but low-light and landscapes at sunrise/sunset. And I've been looking into large prints on canvas, so detail is becoming important.

A 5D MkII will last you many years for those uses.

I'd grab a lens now, wait on the body until all the new 1DX and next gen 5D's come out, that way you'll have some new selection in the used marked along with other sales. But as that 70-200mm IS is one of the more modern lenses, it will be the better investment.

and if you're having low light issues, save money by getting a high quality tripod if you haven't already. or at the very least, a nice monopod.

I have both. It wasn't so much holding steady as it was dealing with the camera not finding a focus so I could shoot. The image I see in the viewfinder looks focused, but the camera won't shoot and I get the blinking green light on the right, meaning it never settled on a focus it liked.

I'd love a 5D MkII, and maybe waiting for that would be a good thing, because it will indeed be a long wait and may require divesting myself of some primes first.

Right now my Amazon cart contains a 70-200mm F4L IS, a tripod ring, and a 67-77 step-up filter ring. My trigger finger is getting itchy.

Waffle, waffle, waffle.

The 1DX is a really BIG investment that I don't think anyone should make until they've spent a good bit of time at the pro-sumer level, like the 5Ds.

A 5D2 now will allow hand held street shooting at night and huge prints that a T1i can't match.

Waiting on a 5D3 may mean waiting until late 2012. Also, the prices on Canon's new release have been through the roof (the new Series II lens are 30% to 50% higher than the lenses they replace) so the 5D3 might end up being a $4000 body with not much more still pix capacity than the MkII.

Any Canon L-series 70-200mm is on my list of all time great lenses. If you have a need for one, then that IS a good item for high on the list. I do use it for scenics, but find it more useful for portraits, large animals, sports and certain scenics.

Mark, with a 5Dii you're not going to get any better focus at night, my recommendation is switch to live view, locate your target manually, and digitally zoom live view so you can get the best possible focus.

this is how i've solved the lack of focus at night. Seems to be the only way unless you carry a mag light.

And DC, by waiting for 1DX and next 5D series to show up, i mean that the market for used 5Dii will be very full, not to actually purchase one of the new ones.

sorry i wasn't more clear. Rushing around packing while replying isn't the smartest idea.

from my experience, i agree with this 100% however, i have not shot anything over a 400mm But my 70-200 (either the 4 or 2.8) have spent a lot of time attached to my camera bodies because of they sharpness and colours they produce.

I own a 500mm, which I think is simply an incredible lens, but I feel no drop off in IQ when I move to my 70-200mm f/4L IS. It's an exceptional lens.

That just means that you need a Nikon.

But that would mean a total reinvestment. The D7100 is supposed to be a low-light wizard. I'd love to try one out and see for myself.

Wizardry? I'd say then that is the work of Satan and therefore Nikon is synonymous with evil

Happy New Years fellas.

I'm a fan of Nikon but never did buy their equipment, I took the red pill vs the gold one.

They age faster in Canada. Something to do with being so far north that the earth's circumference is smaller so the days go by quicker (or some such thing). So folks who are 40 are ready to retire.
