I'm in the market to replace my main battery as my HUD has started working intermittently which is a telltale sign my battery is on the way out. I don't have adaptive steering so I'm pretty sure I don't have an aux battery. Anyhow, what are my options for a non-BMW branded main battery?

When you take a look at your existing battery…if it is a 90AH/92Ah/95AH battery…then it is a 49/H8 AGM battery class size…that’s what you need to look for if shopping for a non BMW branded battery.

If you have a 105AH or 110AH battery, then you’ll need to shop for a 95R/H9 AGM replacement battery.

Plenty of options out there. I would advise choosing a battery from a brick and mortar nearby. I had a Bosch 105Ah AGM shipped from rockauto and the box was all mangled when it arrived. Battery still worked but you risk having a single, very heavy battery being damaged in shipment. My two cents.

Makes sense. I've been looking online at Batteries Plus. There's one right down the street.

Very helpful. How do I know if I have 2 batteries vs 1? Do I need to replace both?
Lastly, do I need the bimmerlink app to code/register new battery? I'm thinking of buying a 49/H8 from local auto zone.

Once you take the battery cover out, it will be easy to see if you have 1 or 2 batteries. If you replace it with same size one, there is no need for coding. However registering is needed regardless of battery type. You will need ISTA or other app to do this.

Ditto…just lift the cargo floor and look at the cover that stores your tools. If you have #6 in the diagram, then you only have one battery…if you have #5 then you have 2 batteries. The cover that has the deep well on the right (#6) means there’s no room for the 2nd battery and PCU module.

I could be incorrect but I believe in my F15 35d M Sport the 2nd battery is for the rear air suspension pump (my car does not have adaptive steering but does have 3rd row seating). Anyone else have thoughts about this?

See the info below that discusses the auxiliary battery and its use on some models. Info is listed for some f15 X5 models that have specific option pkgs that will use the auxliary battery and PCU (power control unit) to help power those options:

Wow, thanks - that's interesting info. I do have rear heated seats but not the other items listed. Seems a pretty common option (rear heated seats) but not that common to have the aux. battery. I'm going to look again at the build sheet for my F15 to see if there are any clues about this. Thanks again!

Hi all, just replaced the aux battery using the ln1agm from Rock Auto. Wasn’t experiencing any issues, just wanted to replace a 7 year old battery to be ahead of the game.

Anyways, the ln1agm is 520cca, and the oem bmw battery is 570cca. Does the lower 520cca matter? It seems that it might, which is why the oem battery is over $400 still.

I do not have access to ista anymore, but it seems it is not necessary to register the battery. I’ve read through every forum post here, and no one has ever actually confirmed to register the aux battery.

Any update thoughts are welcome.

Cheers

My shop registered the aux battery aswell with acel. I got the 520cca from gm dealership as it's for a Chevy bolt 2018. I was wondering the same as the above comment. Any feedback helps.

So the Aux battery needs to be registered or Not? Or just the main?.

Thanks,

My shop registered both batteries. Not sure if it's required but there was an option in his computer so we proceed with it.

Only difference I've seen is after the car is off and you have music and electronics on the car powers off sooner than the oem would. Not by much by a little sooner. Guessing the voltage drops earlier to power off.

"520cca, and the oem bmw battery is 570cca" wondering the same thing, if any difference between 520cca to 570cca.

Generally, the rule of thumb is 1 Cold Cranking Amp for every cubic inch of engine displacement (2 CCA for diesel engines).

Engine displacement is usually expressed in cubic centimeters (CC) or liters (L), which is the total cylinder volume of the engine…1L is about 61 cubic inches (CID)
Doing the math...the N63/N63TU iteration engines are 4.4L engines…so:
  • 4.4(L) x 61(CI)= 268.4(L)
And since the smaller LN1 aux battery is NOT the main battery…it is just used to help with extended electrical needs like ASS (auto stop/start)…a 520 CCA rating should be more than enough to handle the needs of our engines. (Just an opinion based on simple math).

Was at sams club yesterday and they said that they have the 48 570 cca battery but not in stock, see attached. I don't think they have it. Curious when they will stock it back to have a look. See attached picture , is not for the 2017 x5 f15, but older model x5 witch he said it should be the one..hmm interesting

They have duracell platinum agm batteries from what i saw.
