You are correct. You can see an image of all 3 types of clusters below. The anodized rings are the easiest way to tell which one you have:
  1. The basic analog/digital cluster's digital display is on the lower center to right side ...and it has full circle anodized rings
  2. The 6WA analog/digital cluster's digital display goes across the entire bottom section of the display and has 4 anodized rings that are open along the bottom (when the car is OFF) but the circles are filled-in digitally when the car is powered up.
  3. The 6WB all digital cluster has 4 anodized rings that are open on the side and are like two sets of mirrored cC facing each other (can't do a backwards Cc.

6WAs can be had fairly cheap, compared to the 6WB, and is still much nicer than the basic version.
I truly disliked the basic cluster, my OCD couldn't stand looking at the outline of the offset display, even if it was barely showing.
But I had no interest in spending 2k on the 6WB or whatever the cost was back then.
Switching to a 6WA took care of the issue though, small simple thing to do, but very appreciated by my OCD...

I had actually forgotten how much the basic version bugged me, until I saw classic_erik's post. Sorry for being blunt, not trying to make you feel bad about your cluster. If it works and doesn't bug you, no reason to change.

What determines what cluster the vehicle is equipped with? Model and/or model year? Certain packages/configurations? Something else?

I see classic_erik has a 2016 50i M Sport w/ the basic/standard cluster, while my 2017 50i M Sport has the 6WA cluster

The basic and 6WA cluster info was "foggy" back when the f15 debuted. I believe it wasn't really mentioned in the ordering info (at least the early versions). But in some of the other F models that came out around the 2012-2015 model years...it was mentioned that the 6WA cluster came with the Driver's Assistant Pkg
The vehicles equipped with Driver Assistance Package come with a different instrument cluster called: "Instrument cluster with extended contents" AKA "Extended Black Panel" option 6WA and that's the one with the wide LCD section at the bottom of the instrument cluster with that 3D effect. The ones without that option come with the "standard" instrument cluster.
So I guess the question to ask is if you have the DA option pkg which would give you the Intelligent Safety Switch on your dash and the 2016 X5 50i you mention does not have this option or switch?

Good info - thanks. Mine has DA+ so perhaps that's why I have the 6WA cluster.

Thanks man, I love it. I'd be curious how your ACS muffler sounds compared to my SuperSprint. I heard somewhere that SuperSprint actually makes the ACS and Hamann mufflers.
