Did you ever watch "Bill Nye, the science guy"? or was that a Canadian thing?
you can basically cover yourself in hummingbird feeders and they will start landing on you and feeding. doesn't take much as long as you have very active birds. And yes, in some circles, the hummbing birds know me as the "Guru of hummingbird food" |

We almost learned a lesson the hard way once with a hummingbird. Our garage had a red tag hanging off the manual door release and it attracted a hummingbird. Hummingbirds will only try to fly up when they get trapped, so even though the garage door was open, the bird would not fly out. He would have exhausted himself banging against the ceiling if we had left him there. I finally grabbed a laundry basket and a screen off the window and trapped him against the ceiling with the basket. Then I slid the screen between the basket and the ceiling and he was trapped inside the basket. Getting down off the ladder with both hands holding the basket was no easy task. I took him way out into the yard and let him go. He flew straight up into the nearest tree and finally was able to rest.
Lesson here: Don't leave your garage open with hummingbirds around. Or if you do, don't have anything hanging which may look like a flower.

Awesome RED video: $58,000. That. is an entirely different market. They're not killing it because of their affordability, but because of its innovation and digital technology and abilities.

I stand corrected then... but the price you're quoting me is for a refurb 5DM2 camera body on sale vs. a loaded RED camera that they are using in movies such as the Hobbit.

rodi, that's a big step... switching to Canon is like Badger going straight, unless of course you don't have too many lenses.

I see you're putting the steadicam to good use though rodi
so... how difficult will it be to switch from APS-C to full-frame (besides the obvious cropping factor)?

so sometimes something that you're used to on one camera will just seem a little shorter then you are used to. did you end up selling that 100-400? because that will be somewhat similar to the 70-200 on a crop body. Obviously a bit of a difference, but you see my point. it's just a light compensation. you'll be saying a lot for the first few times out with it... "opps, wrong lens" |

to be honest, i'm so used to switching between my 7D and my 5DII so often that I often pick up the wrong one now, only to realize when i hit the button and see my auto focus screen, that i realize i have the wrong camera in my hands.
you may not switch back and forth too much from the 20D to the 5D as much, so may not be an issue. |

Do people use those lens filter/guard things to protect their lenses?

i don't think it's difficult. unless you like the telephoto end. i remember it being really nice putting on a 50 and it being a very comfortable distance again. and when 24mm was wide again.

the thing you have going in your favor is that you already have a bunch of EF lenses already, so the switch will be very easy.
if you had a bunch of EF-S lenses you'd be starting from scratch. and like Rodi said, 24mm is wide angle.... So something like the 24-70 becomes a bit more useable at the wide end of things, and you really don't need to go any wider then a 16-35mm if you ever go that route. my 135 F2, will likely never see the 7D body as it sits just right on the full frame for being a useable focal length for doing portraits. If i only had a crop body, i'd be likely to sell that lens because i would have very limited uses for it. |

for a while i would screw them on and off when i wanted to use the camera and just treat them like a screw on lens cap. All my equipment is insured, so i have a piece of mind when it comes to damaging a lens. If you're buying high end lenses, all the elements of a filter are pretty much built into the lens as it is, making the separate filter just a piece of glass, just something that will get dirty and for you to shoot through. I find the filters also collect smudges a lot easier then a high end lens glass as well, so i don't have to clean as regularly. I actually dropped my 70-200 the other day, and the lens hood took all the impact, the lens cap stayed on, it made me realize, the caps are going to protect it about as much as a piece of glass is. so when walking around, keep the cap on. But when it comes down to it, a lens is an investment, if you choose to keep a filter on as protection, it's a good choice for you, it's completely a personal opinion based argument, I've been on both sides of the fence, and i've made my choice. bottom line is, Prime lenses have the best optics, colours, and contrasts over other lenses because they have less glass in them to shoot through. So why add more? That's my opinion, I'm sure others will argue the value of a good filter to the opposite of me. I have a Cokin system for my polerizing filter and adapters for most of my lensses, so it's never permanent, and it's one filter for every lens no matter the diameter. It's not there for protection, it's there just to do one job. As well as hold any other filters i might like to use |
