Needs some help on this one.

Background: Performed a 50K service (front/rear diffs, transfer case, transmission, hydraulics, fuel filter, cabin filters) and ran a code scan via Foxwell NT530. Got a fault in the Power Control Unit that is new since last service (Oil/Filter/DEF).

Symptoms: None, no lights on dash or iDrive.

Fault ID: D49405
Status: Intermittent
Description: No Message (crash control, 1 05. 0. 1), receiver PCU, transmitter ACSM

This is all that comes back for the fault:
"Run the "System analysis message missing" test module. In this test module, all "Message missing" fault memory entries from all control units are analysed. This makes it possible to localise the fault to a specific area (most likely fault cause).

In many cases, the faults only occur sporadically. To determine the precise fault cause, additional measurements based on the results of the analysis routine need to be carried out (voltage supply, short circuit, contact problems).

If it proves impossible to identify a clear and unambiguous fault cause and the fault pattern continues to appear repeatedly (repeat repairs), then it may be necessary to replace the related wires, plug connections or the control unit.

Caution: If the fault only appears sporadically (no repeat repair) and if no customer complaints concerning the problem have been received, then replacement of the related control unit is neither approved nor logical.

Notice: These faults usually appear in large numbers. If only a single fault related to a missing message has been entered and no other faults related to the function of the control unit are present, then the fault can be ignored.'

my f15 had an issue which made it completely useless for driving for 5 months. the mechanic was searching for the right part to get it to work again. i think it was something about the front driveshaft. after it was repaired, it always made a scratching noise.

i saw the undercarriage of the car, and it looks similar to this:

https://ibb.co/n65hKsy

we started the engine and took a look underneath, and i could see something rotating. i guess some sort of cover is missing there now judging when the failure happened i saw a black cover shredded to bits. this is also where the noise is coming from.

the mechanic said that the noise is probably happening due to the missing cover which insulates sound.

the noise happens in P, D, N, and R, but is most noticeable when in N and when driving.

i have also made a video:
https://streamable.com/ljt3mf

you should be able to hear some sort of the friction/scratch sound.

What exactly is that?

Hi,
I too have a 2016 X5e with a multitude of issues. In April, while driving on the highway, the car simply lost power. I had to coast off an exit ramp and to the side of the road. I turned the car off, and then back on. It started and I was able to drive but with reduced power. I made it about 1/4 of a mile before I had to pull off the road again. I initially took it to my independent mechanic who told me it was the high-pressure fuel pump, so we replaced that, but then he determined that was not the solution. I paid a reduced bill for that. He noticed much carbon built up in the tail pipe and on the spark plugs. He then thought it might be the crank sensor or even the DME. He said he removed much of the top items on the engine but could not completely get to the crank sensor. But then he decided that it may not be the crank sensor bc of the carbon build up in the exhaust and it must be the DME. So he put it back together and we towed it to our local BMW dealership. The dealership determined that it was either a flywheel malfunction or a whole new transmission would be needed. $7k for the flywheel and $18K for the transmission. They really couldn't tell which one it was without removing the transmission to inspect the flywheel. The codes they pulled were 2223B5 MOTOR POSITION SENSOR. That code according to my independent mechanic was related to the crank shaft sensor. The dealer maintained that it wasn't the crank shaft sensor and it was likely a flywheel malfunction, something they saw in a similar BMW recently. We opened a case with BMW NA to see if they would review the case and determine if this was a systemic issue that would warrant paying for the complete diagnosis. They ultimately determined that they would not, offering me $5K towards a new car. Needless to say, we towed the car back to his ther garage where he could remove the transmission. My mechanic then proceeded to remove the transmission and do the flywheel inspection. I pre-paid him 1K for the transmission removal. In late June, he determined that it was a timing chain issue. He said the car is out of time due to a bad timing chain and timing chain guides. Today 7/15 he quoted me repairs to the engine of $3500 and $2500 in labor for a total of $6000. Besides the car being a total lemon, my patience has worn thin and I don’t really know where to turn to substantiate any of this. First, the codes were related to the crank shaft sensor, so why is that not the issue? Second, I need to understand how the flywheel inspection went. Third, I doubt anyone else experienced anything like this but I’m leaning towards just giving the car away for 4-5k to the dealership. And may be the last BMW I ever own

I have had so many issues with my 2016 X5 Hybrid, I purchased in 2020 for 33k, certified pre-owned from the dealership. So many in four months. Starting in March, suspension bags, fuel pump, TRANSMISSION - total 13,000. This last week more issues and I was told, maybe auxillary battery, maybe not, maybe starter, maybe something else. My mechanic told me to take to the dealership and I was just quoted 15,500 to fix NUMEROUS problems, failed electric vacuum pump, both batteries need to be replaced, brake accelerator, 4-wheel alignment, and the best light oil leak coming from turbo charger!!! Is this model a lemon? I have seen so many reports of similar issues here and on the NHTA website. What recourse is there for a luxury vehicle with 84,000 miles, with around town driving? The repairs are more than the car was purchased for and I cannot imagine how I am going to repair or even get anything for a trade-in

Tailgate won't close! (SOLVED) 2014 X5 F15

*use your remote or door button to open (unlock) the hatch*
Was at the drive-in theatre last weekend. We like to back into the spots and set up comfy bed in the back with the seats down. The lights on the liftgate don't turn out while the gate is open, so wee googled a solution - easy - flip the latch on the gate to trick it into thinking it's closed. Solved! When the movie was over and we went to leave, the gate wouldn't go down (afterall, it thought it was already closed). Googled solutions only included locking and unlocking the doors (didn't work), replacing the whole lock mechanism (wtf), forcing the lock open (didn't work). Finally tried the remote button to open the hatch even though it was already open and *pop!* the lock flipped and gate close button worked once more.
Another X5 drive-in theatre tip:
-the stereo turns off automatically after like 15 minutes meaning you have to press the engine start button twice to get the radio going again and this turns on the headlights (blinding theatre goers across from you). There's NO fix for this sooooo...
Bluetooth speakers connected to FM radio apps don't actually let you scan the FM dial, they only connect to online versions of FM stations so that doesn't work either. We purchased an FM radio bluetooth speaker from the theatre for $45 - only good option.
X5's kinda suck for drive-ins but once you get it sorted - worth it

Just picked up a 2017 X5 35i yesterday, 80+mile drive from the dealer in the rain went off without any issues! As I was pulling in to my driveway I get a "Adaptive Headlight Malfunction" Warning message.

Is this a common issue? What is usually the cause of this? How should I trouble shoot it?

Thanks in advanced to anyone that chimes in.

bmw x5 2018 hybrid . problems with hybrid systems

Hello everyone, I bought a BMW x5 xdrive40e 2018 f15 hybrid 99k milage and it has a problem with the hybrid system, or more precisely with the cell module. can anyone please help me how to fix this step by step. I bought two new 12-volt batteries and installed them, but they are immediately discharged and the hybrid system will not charge, but the charge reaches up to 10 percent.
I have all the diagnostic screenshots I can upload.

Propulsion review soon notification

Hi, does anyone know what does the notification "Propulsion Review Soon" mean, I have a 2018 BMW X5 plug-in Hybrid with only 33,750 miles. Although this notification just popped up, the car is driving fine, no changes. It also indicates that I can continue driving the vehicle. The check engine light is also on ever since the Notification popped up. I schedule an appointment with the Service Department for this week. Please advise.

just reading some posts about hybrid. wonder if this is more a dealership approach or real problems which could be solved in a much cheaper approach.

Has anyone experienced a short circuit on their X5 and have any advice or ideas? I've got a list of codes about short circuits and I found that one of my ground straps on the muffler was completely missing, I replaced it today and tried to jump the car with no luck. I posted about it on this thread

any help is greatly appreciated!

There's a synchronization process that can be run with proper software. I'm not sure if the "Carly" type phone apps with an obd2 scanner can do it or not, but my car just threw this same warning and dealership did nothing but software sync process to resolve it. Good luck.

It’s your actual high voltage hybrid battery, not your 12v batteries. Hook it up to ista and run some tests on the battery. There is not going to be a step by step for this, you likely need one or both battery modules replaced.

F16 2018 CarPlay issue

Hi all,
I bought my F16 X16 30d a few months ago, and since then, no carplay has ever worked. After decoding my VIN, CarPlay shows up on my feature options as well as within the car nav system. It allowed me to start pairing, but unfortunately, none of the pairings ever succeeded. I assume that it might have something in common with the previous owner playing with programming "M" logo animation or sport+ mode or other stuff you can get in Bimmercode, or idk what's been used. So far, I have upgraded to new firmware from the BMW website and tried again, but I still have zero success. Can anyone please advise me if I had a similar issue, if the software can be set to factory point somehow, or whatever can be done to make it work? I am not gonna lie I already got myself a g30 540i and want all to be working before it goes, as this is a matter of honour now! I really appreciate any help you can provide.

Bmw x5 f15 hybrid , problems with hybrid system

Hi everyone, I have a 2018 BMW X5 xDrive40e Hybrid (F15) with a 2.0 engine. Unfortunately, the hybrid system in my car is not charging the hybrid battery, and the 12V battery isn't working either, likely due to the hybrid system failure. I took the car to BMW for diagnostics, but the repair cost was too high, and I couldn't afford it.

The diagnostic report showed that the main issue is with the inverter, which is not functioning properly, and the cell module in the hybrid battery is also faulty.

I would really appreciate any help or advice from anyone who has experience with these issues. Thanks in advance to anyone who can assist!

Wonder why inverter and battery cell would fail at the same time ... certainly those are issues which will show sign on dashboard immediately.
Inverter is basically a black box (electronic device) which transform DC to AC which powers the electric motors. W/o inverter the vehicle wont move.
Battery cells can be replaced individually ... dont need to replace the whole battery pack unless most of they are damaged.
I would say that inverters are hard to fail and don't necessarily "wear" ... an alternative would be buy used one. For the battery is a different story ... replacing one cell with new could be an option.
Will need to look for shops specialized in EV.
