Hi guys I have a 2014 BMW X5 with only 28k miles. I took the car for it’s first oil change since owning it (7500 miles after I bought) and within several days I have noticed dripping. I took it to a local place for them to perform the oil change and I bought the OEM filter from amazon and brought my own recommended Castrol oil.

Here are pics on the drips, what do you guys think it is based on location and volume? I was able to pinpoint drip source by taking a picture under the car where the puddle was

Usually when parked overnight I notice I considerable dripping/small puddle


I am taking it to get inspected by a European shop nearby on Friday but would appreciate any input

the shop that did ur oil change DID NOT change out the oil crush washer on the drain bolt, OR they didnt remove the old washer and double stacked the crush washer onto the bolt. all filter kits comes with 2 o rings for the oil filter housing and a crush washer for the drain bolt.

Yep, they either did not change the washer or didn't install it at all. Also maybe didn't torque the bolt to specs.

28K in 6 years? Doesn't look like you drive it a lot. Seems like that shop did not do a good job on that oil change.

Looks like the guys who changed your oil did a half ass job.
Did you tighten the bolt?

I noticed something similar albeit with a smaller amount of oil after I did my own oil change on wifes x5 50i, everything was torqued to spec and used new crush washer and drain plug. The problem was not me cleaning all surfaces after tightening everyhing back together, I never saw a single drop of oil on the ground or on the drain plug after wiping it clean since. I would worry if the puddle got bigger, try to get under the car if you have jacks and wipe out everything.

Thanks guys - I took it back to where they did it and the manager inspected and determined his tech didn’t put in a crush washer! He offered me a free oil change (I made sure it was Mobil 1 European formula however the filter was an Ecoguard since they didn’t carry the Mann’s.) needless to say I won’t be back and I’ll probably only wait 6k miles for my next oil change due to the inferior filter

Yikes, good you caught it in time. Stories like this made me do my own oil changes esp since I'm no longer under the free maintenance umbrella.
It's actually a pretty easy job too, last time I had it done at the dealer they quoted me $200 and ended up paying $600 (Kuni BMW in portland metro area), extra markup for engine filters, never again. Since then I've also flushed my own brake fluid and now planning to do coolant flush as well. I just don't trust their quotes anymore and feel like they take advantage of me. Between our two 50i in the household I already saved $1000 in oil changes.

For what it's worth, the OEM filter wrench is here: https://www.amazon.com/Genuine-BMW-F.../dp/B007VT1354 and the work can be done from the top side to swap the filter. I'd be more concerned with the cheapo filter than I would with having been low on oil.

I have never changed the oil on my X5, still have a service deal. But if it is as easy as on my old E46, I would change out the oil filter right away if I was in your shoes..
