My F15 shutdown HUD

Greetings, I need help with a failure in the HUD of my X5 F15 .... In my country we were restricted from movement from March to July so my BMW was without use for that period. I only turned it on once every two weeks ... When I returned to use it regularly I realized that the HUD did not work always ... It deactivates itself, in the configuration. Today I was testing and I noticed that the HUD turns on well when I put the car in ignition and configure HUD on in the idrive, but without starting the engine ... Then when I put my foot on the brake and start the engine, the HUD deactivates. Do you have any idea what might be happening with my HUD ....

I could solve this problem by disconnecting the battery for 30 mins, I haven't tried that yet.

Note: I cannot take my car to the BMW dealer, because un My country they decided not to support imported vehicles by people outside of them.

Sounds like you need a new battery.

I will check the battery this week ... it is the factory one so it is almost 6 years old, and although it still works well to start the engine, it is possible that it is already presenting failures.

You may get lucky by just giving it a good charge, but 6 years old? It's near the end of its life.

Ensure you leave the ignition in the On position when charging so you get the battery controller providing amperage to both aux and main batteries

Or just connect charger to each battery directly.
Op, you'll need to remove the plastic cover in the rear to see if you have one or two batteries.

I would advise against that. There is documentation in ISTA / NewTIS about not connecting directly to the battery. I confirmed with the dealers shop foreman on how they charge. Ignition on and let it hit both. The battery controller will handle the charging.

On any other car... forsure. With the BMW battery controller, I'd be worried about issues. I'd say disconnect them and then charge.... but that presents its own issues causing errors upon reconnecting.

Interesting. What if you disconnect the battery first?

So hooking up a charger to the terminals under the hood only charge one of the batteries?

If you disconnect the battery first...then charge it directly...when you reconnect...you could possibly get warnings from the check control system or other issues due to the IBS seeing an "unexplained" change in the battery's charge.

That is why BMW's instructions are to charge (or jump) the battery from the terminals in the engine bay...to prevent confusing the IBS:

No...the F15 has a PCU (power control unit) that has a cut off relay that should kick in to keep the aux battery charged. In fact, if you are doing electrical work that requires powering down the vehicle...you need to disconnect BOTH the larger battery and aux battery. If you only disconnect the larger battery...the vehicle is still powered by the aux battery.

Thanks so much for the info, really do appreciate it! Another question then .... so when I was updating my maps, I had the car on a charger and the ignition on. However after about 15 minutes or so, everything shut down. I constantly had to come back and turn the ignition back on. Is there a way to disable that until at least I get a finished charging cycle (or the next map update)?

Leave the door open and plug in the drivers seat belt while on a charger. The car is not really shutting down more of a power save mode. Just push the power button for the radio and stuff will turn back on. The map update does not stall when shutting down regardless.

...ditto on the map update. If you are updating your maps and you're driving around and you get to your destination prior to completion of the update. The map update will start up and begin where it stopped upon the next start up.

Same if you're updating while sitting still...if the car powers down...the update will begin where it left off when you power back up.

Right, my point was not having to "power back up" after 15-20 minutes.

Weak batteries cause electrical issues. Are yours original? And you need to see if you have one or two batteries. Remove plastic cover in rear. Date is stamped on the battery post.

Yes they are the originals, I guess it's time to change batteries then.

I confirm that when I tested my battery the result was that I needed to change it ... once I installed and registered the new battery, the HUD returned to normal operation.

Thanks for your assistance guys
