Driving With Wrong Wheel on Wrong Tire: Any experience with this?

Hi all!

Just had my F15 X5 M Sport 469 OEM wheels refinished by a local shop a couple days ago. Took it for first drive today since wheels/tires were put back on by the shop. So while driving I heard scrapping noise when turning left coming from front left wheel. Drove back home and found out the company installed my 10.5 inch wheel (instead of 9.5) a 275 tire and placed it on the front drivers side. The noise was due to inside part of the wheel was rubbing against knuckle‘suspension when tire was turned left. The finish around the inside face of the wheel has now been ripped off due to scrapping against knuckle.

Has anyone had experience with this? Would there be damage to the knuckle as wheel was pushing in against it while turning? Anything else could have been affected? I’m so pissed and disappointed. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Wow. So they put a 315 tire on a 9.5 wheel in the back then?

They put 315 Tire on a 9.5 wheel in the front driver side. Absolute stupidity. I should learn to always double check others work. Just hope it didn’t damage the front left suspension/knuckle.

unless u drove for a long distance, chances are there wont be much damage, just a bit more accelerated wear to the transfer case. as for the scrapes to the knuckles, itll most likely be just cosmetic. either way take it back to the shop and complain and see if theyll replace the knuckle/rim.

Good advice! Thanks so much for your input. Probably drove 10 miles so not a long distance. Will try to upload photos of the wheel when I get a chance.

Why would there be any wear to the transfer case?

Because the stretched or compressed tyre due to the wrong rim width will have a different outer diameter.

Do you really believe that?

If so, what is the difference fron 9.5 inch wheel to a 10.5 inch wheel?

Or are you just passing on something that was told to you?

It is a 9.5J Wheel with a 315mm tyre versus a 10.5" wheel with a 275mm tyre... Do the maths...

It prob wont have much of an affect if OP just drove in a straight line, its the turns that would be the cause of the wear. OP not only had to deal with mismatched tires front to rear, but also side to side as well. The difference in the width of the tires would've changed the amount of rolling resistance between side to side causing the differentials to compensate constantly. Yes one could argue that that is the whole point of a differential, is to account for the difference in rolling speeds between tires when turning, for matching sizes. This is wear that the diff shouldnt have seen in the first place if the proper sized tires were put at the right place.

If there was an issue affecting the transfer case you would get warnings. The ABS sensors track each wheels speed and if it's off too much it gives you an alert.

yes, if the difference is big enough, it will trigger the traction control making the car think the wheels r slipping due to difference in speed. thats why i said "a [b]bit[/bit] more accelerated wear". none the less, the wear is there, was it big enough to cause catastrophic failure, no, was there accelerated wear, probably. and like i said, driving straight wouldnt be an issue.
