Service request message from car…

I have a 2018 x40e and just got message for oil service and filter change - is that based on time passed, miles driven or is the car actually analyzing it's needs?
Also how urgent is that service need, hours, days or weeks?
I have no objection to getting it done, just learning about the (new to me) car - never had one that asked for a service before!
Thanks all.

If the car is telling you that it needs an oil change now, then change it.

Then, going forward, change the oil every 5000 miles even if the car doesn't tell you.

It goes by time and miles. If you go over you will see the numbers red as overdue. My X5 sat for 5 months due to an accident, but not long after I got it back the oil change was due by date. I got it done because it sat for months anyway but better safe than sorry.

Isn't it condition based, as in oil quality?

Mines said Oil change due in 13,000KM, for the last 4,000. Granted I did the oil 4k ago and again just now.

If you go into iDrive and pull up VEHICLE CHECK or STATUS you can tell the status of the various services.
  • Green = OK
  • Amber = service is due or coming due
  • Red = service is overdue/past due

BTW, your owners manuals should give you some info about these services…and if you don’ have a physical owners manual and nav/entertainment manual…they are built into iDrive. And the iDrive manual also has a search feature…and sometimes there’s even videos embedded

Examples can be seen below as to service due info:

See info below about CBS (condition based service) and how it uses multiple measures to determine when service is required.

And if you know how to unlock your instrument cluster, there is also some hidden CBS data that you can retrieve from the instrument cluster, too.
