Engine Failure/Replacing 2018 X5M - Keep? Or Lease Turn-in?
What would you do... turn in x5m at lease end 2 months away with fresh engine just installed, or buy 3yr old lease end car in 60 days that now has a fresh motor newly installed?
Engine was making a ticking sound like a failing lifter or head gasket leak, car went into reduced power mode. BMW diagnosis as metal filings found in oil, internal engine undetermined failure, and decided to replace engine rather than engine tear down, repair, and rebuild. Dealer says $42K for engine and labor. Warranty was 60 days from expiring. Lease is up in 60 days. |

If you turn it in, would you get another X5M? Do you love it enough to be happy with it for another few years? If so, I'd say keep it. Probably has another year or so of full warranty on it and I would assume the new engine would go longer. I would just want the extension of the engine warranty to cover everythng that would have been touched in the replacement. Not just mechancal, but electical and whatever else you may think of.

If the engine was replaced under factory warranty, there would be no extra warranty on the engine beyond the remainder of factory warranty. TBH, for a 3-yr old car, the new engine makes no appreciable difference in resale value, say in a couple of years. Keep it if you love the vehicle and are getting a good lease buyout deal.

Keep it, as your residual value is likely far below current market prices.

If I were sure of a good new engine and extra warranty, I'd be inclined to keep it. How many miles did you have on it btw?

New engine was installed as "service part" , it may have a 1 year or better warranty. Check with ASM who wrote the Repair Order.
