So KU21 denotes an F16 vs KS43(eg.) for an F15?

Yep. And last digit denotes a version:
1 - LHD 2 - RHD 3 - US And 4th, 5th and 6th digits of your VIN are a Vehicle Type

This is awesome! Thanks for all the info
I'm considering doing this myself as well, does anybody know whether or not the factory towbar is an issue? Does it somehow interfere or makes installing the antennas/sensors impossible? |

So close and yet so far.....
Coded the BDC by making the two file changes and then hooked up power, ground and the LIN bus wire. Completed a full vehicle scan with ISTA+. Had only one fault code in BDC for missing LIN component (because I coded prior to final wire connections being made). That fault code cleared immediately but my Smart Opener function isn't working. My version of ISTA has no test plan for 'contactless tailgate function'; just a blank page. @TheUltimateDrivingManiac, one question about the FDL change: On VAM-SMART-OPENER=activ, I had to select HK, HS or SplitDoor. I chose split door. Is that correct? Any other thoughts? Thank you! |

activ_HK. "Split Doors" is for Mini Clubman.

Changed to HK. Voila! Worked immediately but only once😕. Do you find it is sensitive to the way you wave your foot?

Yeah, sometimes it is frustrating. Worked much more reliable on my F36.

What kind of success rate are you getting? I only finished the installation yesterday but I took off the bumper a day later to adjust the leads in hopes it would make any difference.
Currently it worked almost flawless before I actually fixed the bumper the last time and now it doesn't at all. I tried almost all possible positions for both leads and the only thing I'm reasonably sure of is that the flat one goes between the parking sensors and the parking sensor wiring harness. I tried using the value Wert_43 for FAHRZEUG_TYP as this is the X6M but it didn't help. Can it be that this value is related to the sensitivity or position of the sensors? I've noticed that in a lot of other models the leads are actually quite close together. In the current state it is absolutely useless and I hope I'll find a solution to make it workable. For now, if I could do it again I'd spend the money on a nice dinner Did BMW perhaps arrive at the same conclusion and is this why the feature isn't officially available for this model? EDIT: Never mind. Works! Reading some other threads I learned that I was putting my foot too far under the bumper. Standing a bit further from the car and pointing my toes towards in between the two leads, making the kick movement has been very successful so far. A bit different from the instruction videos I've found online. Money well spent Last edited by goate; 10-16-2018 at 12:06 PM.. Reason: works |

Decided to complete the retrofit, so resurrecting old thread: what's the fuse # for SO? Is it one of the tailgate or PDC ones? Mine seem to be all present, which I find weird given the overall BMW cheapness...

I don't think there will be a fuse for the SO on F15s since it wasn't an option. Probably the best thing to do would be to use an add–a–fuse to the PDC fuse location. Also, if you've done this did you have to run a wire up to the BDC fuse box?

Hey TheUltimateDrivingManiac,
I'm having some trouble with my install. I got this all cabled up like bms5 described earlier in the post. 12v between pin 2 and 3 of the module (61-35-7-422–700) and pin 1 going up to the BDC module 258*4B pin 42. Not sure how that pin was selected but just want to make sure it's the right one. I also coded CAH_SMART_OPENER_COD_FAHRZEUGTYP = 5e, VAM_SMART_OPENER = activ_HK. My car isn't recognizing the module either because it's bad (eBay), I have the wrong wire on BDC or I missed something in coding. You mentioned earlier that there was one more parameter to code in HKL but I couldn't find it. Would you mind double checking that? Also, does everything else look right to you? Thanks in advance Update: I got it working after all! For anyone trying to do this I had to code 3120 HKL_FUNCTIONS > FUNC_SMO from 00 to 01 to get it to work |

Smart Opener update
I never did get mine working beyond the one time that it worked for me. I tried a different SO module (another used -from eBay) but it didn’t work either. I probably should have bought a new module....
I sold my X5 in October 2020 but removed the two antennas and the module from the bumper so if anyone is interested in them, PM me. |

Attached is the schematic for the F16 which uses the exact same part number BDC module. It shows the connection between the SO module and the BDC.

@skoold2003, Instead of connecting to the LIN Bus on pin 42 of the BDC, I ran a wire along the left side of the vehicle and up I to the drivers door where I connected it to the wire leading to pin 4 of the switch block as per the attached diagram showing that portion of the LIN Bus.

So now that I've had it for a while this feature is of little use. It works great once you get the hang of it but it has one huge problem. It doesn't work when the car is locked! I'm not sure if this is something I have coded wrong or just poor design, but usually the time I need it is when I come out of somewhere with my hands full..
