Interesting temp gauge experience

2019 X6 35i

Was running errands today, and noticed that the coolant temp gauge was reading very low, almost not registering. Very odd, I thought but since I had made several stops with short distance in between, I thought maybe it's just not warmed up.

But when I got home, it was still barely reading, so I wondered if I just turn the engine off and on again, if it would read correctly.

Sure enough, the gauge went right to normal temp.

Any theories on this one? Bad thermostat or temp sensor?

It's a CPO, so will just have the dealer check it if it happens again.

That is not a coolant temp, it is oil, sounds like a bad sensor.

Oh, right. Yes I'm an idiot. Guess I'll have the dealer look into it.
