took my 2014 X5 35i in for oil change... currently at 77K miles and they recommended AC filter and cabin filter change. I was shocked at the price they quoted me... $440 for the AC filter and $380 for the cabin filter.
I've own many high priced cars before but have never heard of this kind of price for filters. Any idea how to save $ here? OEM part vs non-OEM part? Any idea how hare is it to change? Could most third party independent shops for it? How many filters are there?

Typical dealership prices. You can get OEM cabin air filters for 80$ online which takes only 5-10 minutes to DIY
https://f15.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1537290 Not sure what there referring to for the AC filter but Im guessing its the recirculating filter which is 25$ OEM online and can easily be done as well https://f15.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1536866 There's also the air intake filter which is 30$ OEM online These are the only filters that need changing for a 35i as part of maintenance Last edited by dubs; 03-15-2021 at 04:53 PM.. |

Because they know many people own BMW's for status and they can rape those people who don't question costs. "Hey - it's a BMW - it costs a lot to drive the best" Most people swallow it.
When people stop taking their cars to the dealer - those prices will drop. Until then.......take some Vaseline with you, find a good Indy, or learn to DIY. Places like this are a great resource to see how cheap you can DIY compared to the dealer.

Glad this question got asked, my 35d was up for its first oil change since I bought it.
Read this conversation, ordered the parts and changed my oil and filters myself in about 30 minutes. Very easy work to do. Minimum tools required. 35d has a different engine air intake filter so don't do buy the wrong. Which I def did. Sounds like the dealership would have charged about $800 for oil and filters? I'll never know. |

Since some forum members don’t have a signature that includes there model nomenclature...if you have the I6 or a diesel model...your air filter(s) may be in a slightly different location...but still easy to replace.
See pics below for air filter location and replacement for the V8. Remove screws that secures the cover & holds the two filters in the center (yellow circles)...replace filters paying attention to which one came out first ( reverse order so center screw goes back the same way):

1. Kuni BMW charged the above for oil and filter changes 2. BMW Portland chargrd us $400 per car to have new tires mounted and balanced and tpms "programmed"; Also, before our last visit they harrassed us to bring wife"s x5 in for complimentary car inspection - we only went the next day because the drivedrain malfunction msg came up; the appointment said they'd do complimentary inspection and diagnose our problem. Two days later and no communication from my SA (i had to call him daily for updates), he tells me the error is due to tpms sensors (wtf???!) So he resets them. We notice a deep scratch on the driver's side door handle and car was driven for 30miles which is more than our round trip to the dealer, so likely was used as his personal car. To add insult to the injury they never did the complimentary inspection for which they harassed us but gladly charged us $200 for the doagnosis. They had the audacity to tell us that the inspection report would come in the email, then after a week of not receiving it we called and were told that there was a glitch in their software and could not produce the inspection report so had to bring the car back...a blatant lie. The only reason I took the car there is due to the extended warranty which is sold and honored by their parent company. We purchased both the x5, x6 and warranties from them, so once they expire we will never step into that dealership again. I did find a reputable indy shop and will taken them there if theres something I wont be able to diy. |
