For everyone's situational awareness,

I EMAILED: Customer Relations & Services
-GOT FORWARDED TO: BMW Assist Customer Care
-GOT FURTHER FORWARDED TO: BMW Customer Care

I was inquiring about if BMW had a plan for the AT&T 3G shutdown for our vehicles with non 4G service scheduled to happen in 2022.

What I was told (after waiting for a while, while they researched the info) is that BMW has not discussed this and they are not aware of anyone losing Connected Drive services for the year 2022. However, they did tell me that if this is going to happen that they will send a letter to all the owners of 3G vehicles prior to the 3G shutdown and give them 1 year to do the retrofit to 4G or newer technology. Anyone that does not do it would have to come out of pocket after the retrofit period ends. I was also assured that BMW will not leave us 3G cars hanging on this shutdown similar to how they provided a retrofit period for their 2G serviced vehicles.

I know that most of us knew this was BMWs most likely course of action but I am just surprised that this has not hit their radar. This tells me that not many people or even maybe no one has inquired BMW about this. So for all you 3G vehicle owners, maybe you'd want to write a quick email to BMW so that we can get this concern on their radar. It's coming and there is no reason they cannot update our systems sooner than later if we get enough people to show a concern about it 🤷🏽

Just wanted to share this bit of information.

Go to your BMW ONLINE, and pay attention up top where you'll see the globe.. it'll show 3G... if so then you have 3G.

Thanks. I'll send out an email. AT&T has started repurposing some 3G, so I feel that we're going to start feeling the lack of 3G before February 2022.

I might hold off a bit on an upgrade though. I'm sure they can use the current 4g combox, but maybe they'll have a 5g or 5g IOT combox at that point and the reduced latency and better reception would be nice. One can dream, lol.

I think nearly all 2014-2016 X5/X6 with idrive4 are 3G.

Anyone get an update on this? I like the RTTI and was not able to renew this year. When I called connected services, they said I would have to talk to a dealership.

Nothing. Last I got was they will contact you if your vehicle is equipped with 3G, but that you have to have an active subscription to Connected Drive.

Following.

I just subscribed to Connected Drive in December. There was no notice about 3G disappearing at all. You'd think a company like BMW would let folks know "Hey, FYI 3G service to your vehicle will be going away soon."

Well the thing is they're not focused on that. When I made the initial inquiry, they weren't even tracking that 3G is going away as they told me they have not heard anything on the matter. So they're not even looking at it.

Attached are the email I sent with date, and what I received in return. After I made the call, that's when they told me what I said originally on the post.

And lastly, after I called BMW Assist... they asked me to contact BMW Customer Care because that's their department 🤣. Needless to say, I told the guy that I've been sent on a wild goose chase and that's when he patched me over and stayed on the line to explain the information I was seeking. Then, I got the answer 🙄

This is what they told me.....

Dear Customer,

Thank you for contacting BMW Assist Customer Care.

************************************************** *******************************

Unfortunately, you can no longer renew ConnectedDrive/BMW Assist services as of 2/1/2021. Unfortunately, your vehicle cannot be retrofitted either in order to receive technology that allows for ConnectedDrive services

We sincerely apologize that we are unable to continue to offer those services to you in your current BMW. If you have any further questions or feedback, please contact BMW Customer Relations at 1-800-831-1117.

Hum. I don't know what to tell you. It wouldn't surprise me, this is how they save money.

My services are active until 2024. And if they upgraded 2G people to 3G, I don't see why they wouldn't do it for the rest. Guess we'll have to wait and see. Power in numbers though...

We're all in the blind with this. I posted based on my question and what I was told by BMW Customer Service.

NBT Evo is 4G, so you would need the NBT Evo unit, screen, controller and ATM module.
I hardly doubt it that BMW will retrofit all these...
FIY, in Europe, all the CIC equipped cars (CIC was used before NBT) have been rendered obsolete by BMW many years ago in terms of communications to the BMW servers.

From what I've read elsewhere, you don't need to upgrade all that. Plenty of people went from 2G to 4G either by upgrading the combox and/or something called the TCU?

All I know is that around 2 years ago, BMW did the retrofits from 2G to 3G for people in the US. Maybe it was easier to do it because there was minimum hardware involved.

Anyone on here got this done who can chime in?

You might be right that it might involve more. But I do believe it is ridiculous for us 2k owners, that BMW sold you something that would be obsolete in less than 10 years 😅.

I do hope this is hitting their radar and they are coming up with solutions for its customers 🤷🏽

Combox is 2G, TCU is 3G, ATM is 4G.

While you can replace TCU with ATM, this is not an official retrofit and I would bet BMW will never do it.

There a millions pf BMWs built in 2013 that lost all communication as they were 2G, and BMW doesn't care about it.

Came here to post this but looks like it has already been posted. It's a shame because on my X1 without nav they upgraded but my X5 they say they can't. 🤷

I was under the belief that 2G will still be operational, at least in Europe, and that the cars will revert to 2G, albeit much slower, communication once lights are out for 3G?

Someone here said that 2G in Europe is still being used because many of their emergency services still run off the technology.

In the US, there is no 2G... and soon, no 3G.

Noticed today connected drive services and rtti stopped in my wife's x5, we did renew subscription less than 1year ago and i'm suspecting no partial refund for partial service either. How lame of BMW.
