First Oil Gasket and Now Rear Main Seal Leak

Folks,

I have a 2016 X5 Msport that has about 46k miles.. around 42k miles.. I had the oil pan gasket replaced... and now, yesterday, I saw oil was dripping.. I took it to the dealer, and they told me this time it was the rear main seal... are both of these common issues to have? The car is relatively new; I still have CPO till September 2021, but really thinking about selling it... I would love to hear your thoughts on these issues.. should I sell it? I don't want this car to be a money dump!

Sell it. Simple as this. It's not a Camry and down the road it will get only worse. Guess how I know.

I've seen this being mentioned lately, is there hard evidence that start/stop puts a significant strain on components, or is this just a myth?

Every time the engine turns off, the oil pressure stops. Then every restart, your bearings are dry for a little bit. Plus you have extra load on the crank at those startups since the transmission is engaged. More wear and stress on bearings and seals. The pennies you save on fuel with start stop is plain dumb when compared to extra wear and tear on the vehicle.

Makes sense. I always had start / stop onever since got the vehicle.. Just wondering, going forward even if I stop this, is it still worth keeping the vehicle..

How bad is the leak? Like leaving spots on the ground? Or just wet on the engine?

other common oil leaks are the valve cover gasket and the oil filter housing gasket. oddly enough the rear main seal is the less common of the four

The dealer said it is the rear main seal that got bad. Two months ago it was the oil pan gasket..

I'm not sure how the rear main seal is set up on that motor, but I wonder if the pan gasket replacement messed with the rear main seal?

Not sure either. When they replaced the oil gasket, they had to replace the oil sensor as well... as it was not giving a correct reading. Wondering since they had to put the tranny down.. is it worth keeping this car..

It's a car, and a BMW on top of that. Things will break. They aren't cheap to fix. If you want something boring and inexpensive, buy a Honda Pilot or something.

But selling a car just because two things break on it is silly. Buying a BMW or any luxury car comes with putting money aside for maintenance and repair.

I'd try to find an independent garage and get a second opinion.

the plastic splash shield on the bottom can hold quite a bit if oil though, so you were just seeing what's coming through the edges or seems

Don't trust stupid dealer techs...Mine also said I needed a rear mail seal AND bunch of other gaskets. They love quoting repairs out of their asses without proper evidence. Take it to an indy and see all the leaks for yourself.

Especially if warranty don't cover. Because they make more money. If you go to a dealer without a warranty, you're going to get bent over raw.
