50i Drivetrain Malfunction Advice
Looking for some advice. I had the infamous drivetrain malfunction error pop up the other day. Truck sputtered a bit under heavy acceleration on the freeway, then the error message popped up and went into a safety speed mode. Was running extremely rough until I was able to pull off, shut off the vehicle for a while. Then it was fine on restart and drove normally, although I was gently driving the rest of the way home. I pulled up ISTA and the codes were for several cylinder misfires(1, 3, 5, 6 with fuel injection switched off messages) Ran through all of the ISTA diagnostic processes and did not find any specific issues. Cleared the codes and vehicle runs fin at normal conditions, but still sputters at high throttle/acceleration, but has not thrown the codes again yet. My plugs were changed at 50k, I'm at 83K, original ignition coils. Online reading suggests heavy acceleration misfires could be fuel pump. Any suggestions on how to diagnose if it truly is the fuel pump(I'll change coils and plugs myself, but no point if its the fuel pump)

It's time to change coils whether your car is modded or not. I would also change spark plugs at the same time to eliminate another possibility. When coil/spark plug stops working, it will cut fuel and deactivate that cylinder firing.

Try plugs first. At 83k miles, might not be a bad idea to do all coils if they haven't been replaced previously (stick to Eldor or Delphi).
My buddy's 2016 50i at 20k miles exhibited similar symptoms at heavy acceleration (intermittent DTMF messages). I ran the misfire diagnosis plan in ISTA, but everything passed. He then went on a 5k mile road trip shortly afterwards and hit the same issues more frequently when accelerating on the highways. Took it to a dealer and they replaced all plugs and one ignition coil and car is running fine since. |

It could also be fuel injectors. I had misfires a couple months ago and the dealer had to replace all 8. There's an extended warranty for those luckily.

Very helpful in my decision making. This service bulletin helps and describes my issue exactly. Instead of spending $250 and my time to replace ignition coils and plugs(especially since many of the cylinders registered problems), i'm going to take it to the dealer and reference to this service bulletin. Hopefully will replace the injectors, but worst case, I'll be out the diagnosis fee, but will get another opinion if they try to charge me $500 for coils/plugs; then I'll DIY. Thanks again all.

Time to put eldor coils and m Sparkplugs after you get your injectors covered. It will run better than brand new. Ask me how I know? My current setup LOL.

Yeah, because of the multiple cylinder misfires, no issues found during service procedures and happening only on heavy throttle, this is my suspicion too. Dealer initial advice was to change coils for approx. $1500 first. I’m going to DIY plugs and coils first anyway, but with low expectations. How much did the fuel pump job run and anyone do this DIY?

This is frustrating; I've done lots of research and finding plenty of positive info on the Eldor brand coils. I'm shopping to replace my 2014 F15 50i coils and FCP Euro shows the go-to coil is the Bosch(lots of people ripping on Bosch coils). They also show Delphi as an option, but not the Eldor brand, which I've seen many F15 people say are the best. Called them and they also said they aren't listed for F15. WTF?????

Check realoem for part number and then go to Ecs or fcpeuro for part number x-ref. I found both ecs and fcpeuro have those compatibility error on simple parts like filters.

Swapped out my coils and plugs. Went with the Eldor coils and Bosch plugs. So far its running great; missing and WOT stutter is gone, so I think this fixed it. I will say that this was a surprisingly easy DIY; very accessible in the engine. Stealership quoted me $1500 for the coils; what a joke, if all I did was the coils, would have taken me 30 mins.....cost me $200 for the coils.
