Currently doing services on MY14, 35d. Wanted to share to make it easy for anyone who wants to tackle the job of removing EGR Valve for cleaning.

1) use the tongue and Groove pliers to grasp the EGR Valve, twist a bit while pulling up to separate a bit. Just enough to be able to start working the pry tool in there with a "rubber mallet".

Hope these pictures help!

I will be attacking the EGR Cooler next (without removal) so I'll keep updating this thread with more pictures for anyone who needs the help.

The vehicle will tell you. I am just getting ahead with a 100k maintenance of all components (Intake Manifold, Intake Ports, EGR Components, Glow Plugs, Heating Module, o-rings/gaskets replacement, etc.)

Just waiting on the special tool to knock out the intake ports. Doing the EGR cooler now. Intake manifold was the toughest, 40 minutes with the pressure washer and oven cleaner.. nice and clean.

To be honest it doesn't look to bad after 100K miles, was your intake replaced under the EGR recall program?

Yes, it was. And you are right, it does not look bad, I just did not want to do everything else and not do these since I want to make it my 100k service 🤷🏽.

I do have a oil catch can set-up, and it definitely helps. I do not see much oil hanging out in front of my turbo like I used to. It does not catch it all, but most of it.

Started doing the EGR Cooler today. I will update pictures after I'm done, but so far it is looking great..

-Walmart 1-1/2" drain plug
-Cheap 3G/3HP Wet/Dry ShopVac
-Brake and EGR Cleaner
-Gunk Degreaser (might use)

One last thing, after you insert the red straw.. Cover the hole where you are spray from so it doesn't shoot back at you and just goes all in the Cooler 👍🏽

Update: last picture, all cleaned out

Thumbs up

Looks great! Well done. Questions for you:
  • What codes did you get for EGR?
  • Did you do any software adaptation resets?

I didn't get any codes, it was preventive maintenance.

My wheels were off to be powder coated so I decided to do some walnut blasting and EGRs cleaning.

And yes, anytime you clean the intake manifold and SCR system you're supposed to do adaptations reset to those systems, according to NewTis.

I found intake manifolds / egr on ebay for about 80-120 a pop,
Other than the patience of fully cleaning these components
Does it make sense spending the extra money to just buy it new,
Not worried about the soot/carbon buildup but more for the flaps siezing

Yeah i just came from an oil change at a shop and he had a manifold he just finished walnut blasting,
Had me turn the flaps manually (which were pretty hard to flip)
And told me thats the gunk stuck inside not visible or reachable,
So he suggested to buy vs clean
But idk like i said new to diesel
I come from n55/n20

It’s fine to buy a second set, as long as you clean the first set. Then you’ll have one ready to throw on when the time comes again. Your intake manifold is easily cleaned with some easy off and a pressure washer.

Your intake ports are the ones that require walnut blasting and that’s if you want to do it fast and painless. Not to mention, you’ll still have to get into your PRI-SEC EGR Coolers.

Also, change your oil every 5k, regardless of what anyone tells you.
