19" Square Tire Recommendations

What is the general consensus on a square 19" setup for tires these days? I live in Pittsburgh so I need decent snow performance. It's my wife's car and she does not want 2 sets of wheels. I'm not sold on getting run-flats again but not opposed to them either.

BMW likes to run the staggered set-up but you can find many performance SUVs and high performance SUVs running a square set-ups. Many people with the X5 switch over to a square set-up for the winter without any issues. You lose the aggressive look and stance on the car and sacrifice some rear traction in good road conditions, but usually not substantial noticeable. You can always use spacers on the rear wheels if the offset doesn't produce the desired look. If I remember correctly the Luxury line and X-line come with a standard square set up on 19" rims. Many like the Conti DWS06 for an all season tire. I'm in Pittsburgh and have had no issues driving around in fall and early spring with a square set-up. If you do desire a separate set, I'm selling my winter set-up off a E71 X6 that fit the F15/16.

Nice to see a few fellow Pittsburgh members on the forum.

I am running a new set of DWS06's All Season on a 20" staggered setup to get me through this winter.

I am thinking about looking into a 20" square setup as a winter set and then run 22's for a summer setup starting next spring.

I have seen a few 19" winter sets on here and other forums that I have considered going with as well.

I run staggered 469M for a summer and square 467M for a winter, both on OEM RFT tyres. Winter setup looks ugly, but I don’t care.

She has an Msprt with the double spoke wheels. Do you have pics of the set you’re selling?

I am quite pleased with them. The road noise/comfort alone over the runflat oem is quite a difference. I haven’t had a chance to really push them as far as cornering, but fromwhat I have done so far, I’m happy with their performance. Even in the wet conditions we have had lately with puddling water.

From the owners manual...looks like BMW recommends a "square" set-up for 19" winter tires...and living in snow country...it would be safer to use dedicated winter tires if financially feasible. Dedicated winter tires just flat out perform better when temps fall and stay consistently below 45° F in dry/wet/sleet/freezing rain/snow/ice. Not only in acceleration but also in turning/handling as well as braking.

I went to college in Pittsburgh; season pass to Seven Springs every year. You should be fine with the Conti DWS/06; I had chains for hairy situations when I went into snow country further north. Pittsburgh did not need the chains.

I ended up with the contis dws-06, getting them put on Wednesday along with an alignment. Surprisingly, Bobby Rahal was in line with the local tire shops so I'm going there.
