I'm from the UK. Here most people would assume your fancy watch is a Thailand knock-off unless accompanied by the suit, shoes and car.

Smile watch

I noticed a difference too. I recently bought apple watch and changed strap and someone in the office in other department started a conversation and asked me about where did i get the strap, that he is also planning to take one and get some straps for the watch blah blah blah...

Clothing sets the first impression. I have walked into a store with jeans and a polo and see only an occasional sales associate. I walk in with a deer leather jonker (Bavarian style traditional jacket) and be followed by the associates the entire time in the same store only days apart. When I visit bmw for services it is the same way, business casual and get great service, cargos and a polo, not quite the same.

Oh my, I see the shite talkers are alive and well in the US. Such shallow and quite frankly stupid behaviour as listening to and judging someone by their watch brand is typical of the designer and fashion conscious idiots that exist everywhere.
The designer brands and designer outlets depend on this type of silliness and stupidity to bolster there huge profits for what is often overpriced junk.

Oh look nice watch, she must be very clever let see if she will talk to us! you fuckin stupid buffoons.

I find that how people treat me almost SOLEY depends on how I treat them, DEFINITELY not what I am wearing.

There is really only one exception that I have noticed to this.....is in a hotel bar. If I am wearing my $12K Omega, its like chumming the water with the high class hookers.........

The hookers in vegas can spot a decent watch from about a Mile away.

People that are not into watches just don't look at your wrist. Even if they did, they wouldn't recognise a high end watch. A WIS will always look at your wrist but will probably not comment incase you're wearing a fake. Tag's are lower end. Anyone who doesn't know about watches but is pretending they do will throw PP into the conversation. Ask them which Gerald Genta models they like best and they will close the conversation quickly. A proper WIS will have a watch collection worth a lot more than a 3 series.

Several years back a friend got one of the first model of Casios that had the dial appear when you moved the watch up to tell the time, it had all kinds of gadgetry. It was an under $75 dollar time keeper. He and a friend of mine were out at dinner and talking time keepers. My other friend was wearing a Rolex submariner. After their discussion a couple of nice looking gals from the table behind came over and commented on the Casio and how it was so cool. They completely ignored the Rolex.

If it makes you feel good, then do it

Is WIS some kinda acronym for fancy hookers? or watch geeks? Obviously just a regular geek here, desperately trying to stay up to date.

a nice (not extravagant) watch can help break the ice and lead to other conversations

I think a classical watch says a lot more about a person than shoes do

What's the alternative accessory for people who simply don't care for time pieces or simply don't like the feeling of having something strapped to their wrist?

Holy Shit, really? The way folks dress and act now a days you can't really tell who has money, if that's the bench mark for good customer service. The fact that this is even a topic is so....douchie, this is seriously what people hate about rich and or pretentious people. I do ok, I dress casual and I treat people well, I tip well, and believe in the golden rule. If you need your wrist watch to open doors then you're doing it wrong......

When I visit a BMW dealer for some reason people think I work there, can't figure it out. My shirt even had my business logo but I guess people are blind. Maybe I'll just start to play along...

WIS = Watch Idiot Savant.

1.A person self trained to sleep in 5 positions while wearing his/her COSC certified chronometer in bed.

2.A person who opens the back of a new Patek on the first day of acquisition and hand winds the rotor to tighten up the main spring.

3. A person who takes his 2000 meter water proof Rolex SD off from the wrist. And puts it into the deepest pocket, and three plastic bags before walking into a rain storm without any rain gear on.

4.A person who waits every 5 minute in front of his radio controlled clock in order to adjust all his/her 14 mechanical watches to the accuracy within -2/+2 seconds per 24 hours.

5. A person who can memorises all serial numbers of the Rolex watches made in the past 60 years but keeps forgetting the wifes wedding anniversary.

6. A person who washes his/her watch in luxury shampoo, polishes with specially bought cloth. Then rests it on another specially bought cloth just encase they scratch the stainless steel.

it's difficult to tell whether some people walk on eggshells around me because i'm wearing a grail piece or just because i'm a complete prick.

i'm fine with either.

more seriously though, i think if you're wearing a mid level piece like a Rolex sub or a Breitling Navitimer, something with some wrist presence, people will assume you're not an idiot. Afterall, most people cannot afford to put a $5k - $9k piece on your wrist.

However, if you walk around with a solid gold rolex or a serious Patek the rest of your first impression (clothes, posture, gestures etc) is probably more impactful and more immediately noticed than the watch.
