High Oil Consumption New F85

2018 F85 with 3,500 miles on the clock, originally delivered in June 18. Since the 2,000 mile "break in service" it has needed an oil top off every 750 miles or so since (2 so far). My wife drives it 95% of the time (not hard) and I drive it 5% of the time (very hard).

Is this consumption normal? (I don't remember experiencing this in previous Ms)

The engine in the F10 M5 is virtually the same and you can also search that forum to get more of an idea of oil consumption with this motor.

Oil

My '17 X5M has never required any top-off as the readout shows max fill since I bought it new. This has been the case for my previous 2 M cars as well. I attribute this to a somewhat more aggressive break in than is recommended.

Mine has 30k miles and I had to add a quart last week. I have had to add a quart between every oil change since new. BMW give me two quarts after each oil change to keep in the trunk. They told me to add 2 quarts when it asks me to add 1.

I drive the piss out of it just about every time I drive it.

I normally have to add a quart between oil changes but by no means every 750 miles. It's been the same with all my BMW. I drive them hard.

+1. I’ve added 2 qts in 32,000 miles. 750 miles per quart is insane.

I generally do not follow the manufacturer recommendations when breaking in my cars. For the first few hundred km (and most importantly the first few km after driving off the dealer lot) I use moderate to near full throttle in higher gears, with frequent backing off/closing of the throttle, in order to seat the rings. Needless to say, it's a jerky affair for a while. I do take care to avoid high rpms and 100% throttle until about 1000 km or so.

Knock on wood, but since adopting this technique, I have never had an engine that required an oil top up between changes. That includes my X5M, which I have had for a little over a year.

My F10 M5 had serious oil consumption and it ended up being valve stem seal failure at 40k miles.

Now at 5,897 and needing another quart. General operation is short trips (<3 miles) between home, office, and hospital. Wife doesn't drive it hard (she had a 997-2c4s that she tracked so she knows how to drive hard but doesn't)

It's the short trips that's causing the oil consumption. I have the same problem 1 mile to work and back, so I leave early and turn my 1 mile journey into a 15 mile run that seems to work. I asked one of the techs and he asked that specific question. How long is your commute? He told me to increase it, no problem.

Wow that's unfortunate. When you visit your SA again in 750 miles or so, you may want to ask him/her for an 'oil consumption test' for peace of mind. GL.

My commute is local 10 miles one way in my 2018. I'm at 5216 mi and I've needed 2 top offs since 1200 mi break in service. It's been about 1600 mi between top offs. SA told me that's normal. I mostly drive in efficient mode with only occasional hard driving in sport/sport +/D3. All top offs are free, but I bought an extra quart in keep in trunk in case of a road trip.

I'm over 51k miles on my 2015 F85 and have never needed a drop of oil between oil services.

I didn't baby my 1200 brake-in ... But didn't redline it either.

I drive higher mileage M cars that's just my preference. I had a F86 with 70k miles which required a quart of oil every 5-700 miles or so. It bothered me as much as the lack of storage space, so I traded it for an F85. Much more practical car and I've been driving for over 1500 miles with 60K miles on the odometer, and I haven't had to add any oil at all. My work commute is 5 to 10 miles each way

I had my 2018 F85 with 7800 miles asking for 1 litre of oil yesterday. Which I put in. Today it again asked for another 1 litre. This I found strange and it is now at BMW as I've either got a faulty sensor or there is something wrong with the car.
