Thule Motion XT XL or Yakima Skybox Carbonite 18/21
Took my son boarding this weekend and the wifey was a little upset that I loaded the gear inside the X5 so looking for an cargo roof mount cargo bin/box. I've seen post of the Thule but nothing of the Skybox so checking to see if someones got the Yakima one now.
I basically want to be able to load 2-4 boards with all the gear(boots, jackets & pants). I'd appreciate all feedback. Thanks! |

I used to have a Yakima Skybox 21, it was great. I have Thule Aeroblade crossbars. No weird noises and loss of MPG was negligible.

I noticed I didn't mention any details. I put four snowboards, four sets of bindings (detached from boards), boots, helmets, all the clothes. Still plenty of room if spare. I stopped using the roof box and got rid of it because I couldn't drive into my garage with it on and I had nowhere to store it.
Nowadays I used a Sportube Series 3. Fits three sets of skis and poles, or two snowboards with bindings facing each other (fits more boards if you don't attach the bindings). If you put in skis there isn't any room for boots, jackets, and pants, but for snowboards if you don't attach the bindings, you can stack all the boards you need, plus fits in your boots, bindings, helmets, jackets, pants. For air travel it is considered a hard case therefore airlines are liable if your equipment is damaged. For driving I can put it on my crossbars with straps and there is negligible MPG loss and very minimal noise. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003STEEGQ/ (The Special Edition has a lifetime warranty)
