F85/F86 RES (Rear Entertainment System)
I am finalizing my order on my F85 and I am considering the RES for my son. With coding, the NBT & RES-HIGH are highly capable of playing many video formats via USB, which is very convenient, unlike an iPad.
I am concerned with how the displays are fixed to the back of the front seat, but I have not seen the RES on any F85/86 ... only the F15/16. I believe the RES screens on the ///Ms are higher and cover the pass-through holes in the seat, whereas the standard X5/X6 are fixed lower on the back of the seat. In addition, from pictures on the BMW USA site, the RES screen on the F85 appears to sit flush in its highest position, whereas the F15 appears to sit far from the seat and less streamlined. Does anyone have the RES in their F85/86 and can comment? F15: F85: |

On the X5 M my 9 y old daughter likes it, easy to use. Viewing position is ok, can be swiveled vertically.
Good image & sound quality, but, unlike recent Grand Voyagers, cannot play BluRays, only DVDs, maybe improved in 2016 models? Delivered with only one very flimsy headset, if you find a better one pls advise here. I have some concern in case of an accident, the screen is a hard object in front of rear occupant's face - even wearing seat belts. |

My 7 year old son loves the RES (and his iPad too, for full disclosure).
The set up is similar to the OP's bottom photo. (I think the middle photo is a rendering and does not reflect the actual placement in the X5 M cars). As Ajob mentioned, the screens rotate (orient) up and down from a fixed axis. They do not sit fully flush. They are clear and bright (i.e., good resolution), even with only a DVD source. They can be used with wired and wireless headphones (I use wired because it's one less battery to worry about being charged). The system comes with a wireless remote to control playback. They function well and as advertised. I like how they come on with a press of a button and resume from the same point of the DVD when the car was turned off. My son has no problem controlling the content. I also like how they continue to play if you only press the ignition once (i.e., not fully off). It's a great feature when you are stopped briefly. You do not need to have both screens on at the same time. I would order again, if only for the convenience. Very high build quality. |

does anyone have a real-life picture of the screens from the side. i wonder just how far these sit off the seat, if the middle picture is not accurate. my son will be almost 1 when i have the vehicle delivered, so i'm sure it will prove valuable over the 3 year lease.
Does the system have to be used with headphones, or can it play over the sound system in the car? (Not that I am that excited about listening to it over the B&O system ... just not sure headphones will be a viable option when he is younger) |

I highly suggest the BMW OEM wireless headphones. They link to the system - once you turn them on, they link right away. No IR fuzzy business. They also turn off when the system turns off.

thanks for the pictures ... while they do sit further off the seat than i expected, its not as bad as on the F15
are headphones the only way to hear the audio on the RES, or can it play in the car. Still concerned that he will not be able to use headphones or keep them on at the age of 1. |
