X5 35d HPFP failure expectations

I have a 2015 X5 35d just hitting 85K miles. I'm planning a long summer trip. I've heard I'm at the mileage where HPFP failure is possible. Are there any indications of impending failure? Is this a common problem or rare? Maybe I should take my GLE on the trip instead?

I would hate to ruin the trip with a disabled car on some back road in the mountains.

Where did you get that information from? Yes, HPFP failure did happen but if I remember correctly it was defective pumps on the early production MY or low quality fuel. In most cases BMW would proceed with fuel test to verify fuel quality. In my opinion you will be perfectly fine as far as you change your fuel filter and use good quality diesel from high volume pump (big truck stops by the highways with branded stations are the best, try to avoid GAS&SHOP in the middle of nowhere).

I'm sitting at 117k right now, MY14… zero issues. Don't ride your SUV until empty or close too. 🤷🏽

Thanks, with the recalls and extended warranties for the fuel pump. I thought there was a serious problem with the pump.

I wouldn't "worry" about the HPFP failing on you during the trip. Plenty of other things that "could" happen to derail the trip. Coolant system issues being at the top of the list. You could replace it preventatively... but it's expensive. And holds a 120k mile extended warranty. So probably not economical to do that.

500 miles shy of 100k on our 2015MY. Drive it from empty (30-50 miles range remaining) to full every tank. Every BMW I have ever owned actually gets treated the same. Nearing 30 vehicles, only had 1 fuel pump failure. I'm inclined to think that is a myth from olden days that you should fill up no lower than 1/4 tank.

As others mentioned OP, fill up at high-turnover stations and you should be fine. Others swear by fuel additives but I avoid them because it voids BMWs extended warranty on the pump.
