Some did. Only to replace their drivetrains later. Transmission is maxed out on stock m50d engine.

I know on the older 335ds they put the same version of the ZF used in 750s as compared to a less robust one that went in the 335/328/330ss. Did that practice not continue on later diesels? I thought those ZF 8-speeds were pretty stout

There are several versions of those ZF's. Those were in m50d are rated for 750 Nm's, stock M50d is 740 Nm's - not much headroom.
