how to use the metal key in the remote fob

Can I use it to open the door and start the car in case the remote key fob doesn't work? This can happen if it runs out the battery. I'm asking because I got a warning 'Remote not detected, start the car not possible' once. Should I go to the dealership now? I just figured out how to take out the metal key but don't know how to use it.

It can open the door by popping off the small rear part of the door handle. Don't think it will start the car though.

Thanks so much. I managed to pop off the small plastic cap although I feel like I may break it. But when I open the door using the key, the alarm goes off. Is this normal? I couldn't find anywhere I can insert the metal key to start the car.
The bigger problem is I will be stranded if the remote fob doesn't work. What if I am hundreds miles away from home? I'd better still drive my Sienna for long trip.

I think if you put your key fob up to the steering wheel it should allow you to start the car.

Maybe bring both keys on a trip?

I usually carry both keys and spare battery for long trips.

There's a spot on the right of the steering column (it's marked as well) where you hold the fob in order to start. No need to carry extra fobs or batteries anywhere.

in the chance that ur fob doesnt work (eg: out of battery), ur supposed to place ur fob along the right lower side of the steering column cover, there will be painted markings to show u where to place the key. this will allow the car to pick up the transponder off of the fob allowing u to start the car, even when there is no battery in the fob to emit radio waves off of the transponder.

Unless you are going for a trip and while in that trip you are ignoring the message warning saying that the remote is not detected, and you still not getting it fixed, or you are not using the car for a long time during your trip, then yes, you will be stranded.

The battery is easy to replace and if your car still under BMW Care coverage, they will replace the battery for you.
Last time mine was changed on the 2nd year of ownership.

A lot of the newer car doesn't even use mechanical key to start the car anymore.
The key is for unlocking driver side door, locking glove box, and/or some center console/armrest storage.

Thanks guys. So I don’t need to worry about the battery in the fob.

On the day when I saw the warning message, I dropped the remote on the hard surface floor. Will this cause damage?

I feel like I'm Being punked right now.

Just change the battery man. Takes 5 min. And yes dropping it is not recommended. Just like any electronic device. It shouldn't break after once but I wouldn't test my luck.

LOL)) I think we will learn soon that it wasn't much of a hit since by the time remote hit the hard surface it has lost its speed since the hard surface was a bottom of the pool.

The battery may become loose when the remote hit the ground. It’s the same as a drained battery. I tried to take off the cover following the user manual but the plastic feels so flimsy and cheap. I just gave up. I don’t want to break it.
